Caliber comparison - bullet drop...

Can anyone tell me, off the top of your head, the 1000 yard bullet drop comparison betwee a 7MM Rem Mag, and the .416 (I believe it is) Lapua ??

Also the 1000 yard terminal energy of each ??

I know I could look it up.

I'm just being lazy.

    Do you mean the 338 Lapua (416 Rigby case, shortened and necked down), or the 416 Barrett (50BMG case, shortened and necked down)?

    If your thinking about building one, the 338 Edge (338-300 RUM) is right there with the Lapua, or you could simply do a 338-416 Rigby (IIRC there is even a "improved" version of that one out there).

    The actual answer is going to depend on the actual muzzle velocity and the BC of the bullet being used
    Per the JBM calculator ( http://www.jbmballistics.com/~jbm/cgi-bin/jbmtraj_simp-5.0.cgi ):
    A 168gr SMK, launched at 3000fps and zeroed at 100yd, will be 300" low at 1000. Energy at 713ft-lb, remaining velocity 1383fps and take 1.484 seconds to get there.
    A 300gr 338 SMK, all else being the same, will be 233" low. Energy at 2330ft-lb, remaining velocity 1870fps and take 1.268 seconds to get there.
    Now, I don't know if those muzzle velocities are accurate or reasonable, but should give you some ideas.

    That's the sort of comparison I was looking for - and I guess I meant the .338 Lapua.

    In the real world of competition, we shoot the 7 WSM, 7mm Remington Magnum and the .284 Winchester but we load them with the 180 gr. Berger VLD which leaves the 168 in the dust.

    1,000 yards:

    1778 fps.
    1263 ft/lbs.
    -235.4" drop
    52.9" drift
    1.3 seconds of travel.

    The .338 Lapua is more useful PAST 1,000 yards and most us use the 250 gr. Lapua Scenar as the Sierra is not quite up to par yet.

    1,000 yards:

    1771 fps.
    1740 ft/lbs.
    -238.4" drop
    53.7" drift
    1.3 seconds of travel

    Please note the similarities and the major difference being just the remaining energy for the Lapua.

    I'm working on other loads with different cartridges and custom made bullets which will be use out to 2,000 yards.
