Muzzle Brake For Howa

Can anyone recommend a good muzzle brake for use on a Howa Model 1500 w/ 24" heavy barrel?

    My gunsmith has a extreamly effective 2 stage one he designed/makes, they run $175 + install.

    There are any number of others out there, it's just a question of how effective, how loud and how much
    Side note, as a brake works by deflecting the gas to the rear, quite and effective are counter productive terms. IOW the larger the percentage of gas reflected and the greater the angle of reflection, the more effective (and louder) the brake will be.

    Wow, sorry about the size of the picture. I had one of my gunnies brakes on a 30-06 bolt gun, it brought the recoil levels down to 223 bolt gun levels (and made you glad you had double ear protection on)

    Muzzle brakes are not for everyone - they are loud and create a muzzle blast zone the requires safety precautions

    If you are going to shoot prone afield (dusts and other debris blasts from bottom holes), I'd stay away from muzzle brakes with 360 degree holes.

    I have a Holland QD (the new radial is better) on my Savage 111F in .300 WM (recoil is comparable to .243), and other custom muzzle brakes with similar design.

    Those Harrells brakes are as good as any out there... and you sure can't beat the price...
    I just installed one on a 338 Ultra Mag and the guy was amazed at the reduction in recoil.
    I also added a Sims pad and the felt recoil is less than a 308.....

    Or you could always send it off to Magnaport. Those have proven effective on my rifles and shotguns.

    For what it is worth, I got this from a gunsmith on another forum that specializes in long range precision rifles who design his own muzzle brakes as well as his own line of wildcat calibers ...


    If your looking to reduce felt recoil, DO NOT HAVE YOUR RIFLE MAGNA-PORTED.

    This process was designed for big bore handguns to help control muzzle jump. It was not intended to be used on rifles by design but has been misused for along time in this manner.

    The magna-port system will not reduce felt recoil. All it will do is keep the muzzle down which actually transmits more recoil energy to your shoulder in a straighter line.

    When the rifle lifts in recoil, it absorbs alot of that recoil energy. When it is kept from doing this, your shoulder gets all the recoil energy transmitted to it.

    Just to prove my point, Magna-Ports owner Mr. Kelly had to design a system called Magna-Brake with is an actual muzzle brake designed to do what the porting will not, reduce felt recoil.

    If you want to stop muzzle jump, go ahead, if you want to reduce felt recoil, do it right and use a brake.

    Thanks for all the info, you guys give me alot to think about. I was told i would have t have the barrel threaded (not sure if that was true or not) to accomodate a MB. If that is true, do i run the irsk of reducing the accuracy of the rifle?

    You will have to have the muzzle threaded, and possibly trimmed slightly as some brakes need to be "clocked" or indexed so that "up" is up.
    As far as the accuracy goes, the point of impact will probably change, but often the raw accuracy (group size) is often improved do the the extra muzzle weight.

    I sure appreciate the very professional job you did putting the Harrels on my 375 H&H Mag Encore barrel.

    Recoil is down to a 30-06 now.

    Hello,
    I have been away and wasnt able to reply, but after alot of consideration and the fact that i nneded to get the barrel tooled, i decided not to go with a muzzle break.
