"Expansion Chamber" on a shotgun
What is the purpose of the "Expansion Chamber" as I have seen it called, on the Mossberg Rolling Thunder shotgun? I would call it a flash hider, but have also seen it refered to as an "expansion chamber". I also saw an ad for one that refered to it as a golf ball launcher. I am sure that this was labeled in jest, or am I that out of touch?

It's allegedly to reduce recoil and give a rail attachment for toys.
I'm no expert on these, but it appears that the barrel itself is quite a bit shorter than the 23 inches this attachment gives, so it might demonstrate a bit faster shot spread. However, this would only begin to be seen out beyond about 10 yds.
It might reduce recoil a few percentage points, but it's definitely not worth the size trade-off. Consider that the entire purpose of giving up the control and accuracy of a full length stock for a rear pistol grip is to increase mobility in tight quarters.
In reality, it's there in hopes of selling to the gee-whiz tacticool types. They should've used 'No Shotgun For Old Men' in their marketing campaign.
A large portion of today's market doesn't realize that 'expansion chamber' systems like this are really nothing new. Cutts marketed large chambered shotgun compensator for many years, but even their somewhat shorter length didn't justify any advantages.

I can believe it *slightly* reduces recoil and muzzle jump, though probably not that much, and IMO not enough to justify the added weight and length.
I think if you want to go the route of putting a ridiculous attachment on the end of your shotgun, the Mossberg "Road blocker" with the dedicated compensator is the way to go:0
