rifle identifaction

I recently accuired a rifle I need help in identifying. there are three looks like german eagles stamped in the barrel and reciever. on the left side of the reciver ring are the numbers 7648 and a 0 under the first four numbers.also on the left side of the reciver is Mod.98 .on the top of the reciver ring are the letters BNZ and under that is the numbers 43. on the safety there is the numbers 8450.
I was told by the person I got the rifle from that he belieced it to be mod. 98 german mauser. Any help in identifying this rifle and its cal.would be apprecated.

    Pics would be most helpful in identifying this. It sounds as though you have a German Mauser as your friend said. With the two differnt numbers on the safety and the receiver, it sounds also like the serial numbers don't match. All the parts serialized back then did match and finding one with matching numbers increases the value dramatically. The BNZ means made by Steyr-Daimler Puch. 43 would be the year I presume. I love Mausers but I'm not a true expert on them. It's going to be a great shooter for you if you like to shoot. It's going to take a hit money-wise for the mis-matching seral numbers though. Shoot it and enjoy it.

    thank you for the information. I figured it was well worth the $100 dollars I paid for it. I Hope it shoots as well as my 303 british mk2

    Be wise to have the head space checked with the different bolt.

    I follwed duckhunters suggestion and took it to a gun smith to have the headspace checked. He said that was good but he also pointed out some very small stampings in the barrel and reciever that he discribed as best he could tell looked like the ss lightning bolts but he also said that it looked as though at some point there was an attempt to stamp over them.My question is was this a common practice
    or were there any of these rifles ever produced with the ss lightning bolt stamp?

    musiccitymadman...what you might have is a rather rare BNZ Single Rune 98k. HHimmler had the idea that 98k's could be made by concentration camp inmates for the SS. The program began at the SteyrDP plant in 1943 and the rifles were marked with a single rune on the receiver between the 43 date (top) and the code for SteyrDP (BNZ) at the bottom. Check your rifle carefully in that area for a rune mark...you should use a mag glass. Even though your 98k is mismatched, if it is a Single Rune BNZ that increases its value as it was made for the vaunted SS. And because the SS was so hated, many capture rifles were defaced.     This could also be a Russian capture gun. Millions of Mauser Gewer 98s were captured by the Russians (along with vast stocks of 8mm ammo). They were taken into Russian inventories and kept in reserve. Most were reworked and often have missmatched bolts. A good indicator of Russian capture guns is a coat of Shellac all over the rifle and new serial electro-penciled on the bolts and/or extractors.
