Shotshell Question
Good evening forum members. I have 4 boxes of Winchester "Upland Heavy Field Loads" in 16 gauge. They have 3 1/4 drams of powder and 1 1/8 ounces of number 6 shot. These shells are in the better quality casings and have short brass. With the powder and shot specs that I mentioned previously, would this be considered a "high powered load"?

Compared to a 2 1/2 dram 1 ounce load of #8s (for dove or skeet) 3 1/4 drams behind 1 1/8 ounce of 6s I suppose is "high powered." Makes a pretty good pheasant load anyway. 0 -
I thought so, but the short brass threw me off. I had never seen high powered shells with short brass. I'd like to find these in #8 shot. 0 -
High and low brass are things of the past today you need to look at the inside construction of the case and the written data on the outside of the shell. The brass is there mostly for looks they even make some cases that have NO BRASS. 0 -
"Back in the day", the brass was to contain the powder column, and keep it from burning thru the paper hull. Black powder, remember? More powder needed higher brass. No longer needed. I have a few rounds in my collection than are see-thru all plastic- no brass at all. 0
