Dumb question about Browning BLR

My buddy at work bought a used Browning BLR lever action. It came with no paperwork and no manual. He asked me to inquire here if anyone knows how to remove the lever so he can remove the bolt for proper cleaning. I personally never owned one of these, and a search on the 'net really was not that helpful.

Anyone offer any tips?

    I'll suggest he take it to his local gunsmith, the lever operates a 'ring and pinion' gear assy that mush be 'timed' for proper headspace.

    Do you REALLY need to disassemble the bolt for proper cleaning?

    How about a whole bunch of gunscrubber/brake cleaner instead?

    Prior to retirement, I was the Chief Firearms Test Engineer at Browning R&D.

    I'd strongly recommend you NOT attempt to disassemble a BLR. Without the proper tools it is VERY difficult to reassemble. Also, it's not generally necessary to do more than normal bore maintenance.

    Ok, thanks for all the food for thought. I have passed that on to my buddy, and he even printed out the online manual. Maybe we were asking the wrong question.....what is the proper way to clean the BLR after useage? The manual does not even really touch on this subject...
