Refinishing gun stocks

Hi Guys
Does anyone of you guys have a wood refinisher that they would recommend? I have a Remington M-600 stock and a Savage M-24 DLX. that also needs refinished.

    I don't know for sure, but Donnie Gemes might do refinish work. Try him at 660-438-4568

    I've had good luck with Tru-Oil; lots of coats, lots of very thin coats!

    I've also had very good luck with tru-oil. the key to this is preparation before applying the finish. if you get the stock glass smooth prior to adding the finish the results will susprise you. like rcosby stated "lots of thin coats" i put the tur-oil on with my fingers and i smooth with 5-0 steel wool in between each coat. i think you are asking for someone to do this for you but i much perfer to do this for myself.

    You may not find anyone who specializes in stock refinishing. Few people have it done. They either do it themselves or it gets done as a part of having a gun refinished. For same reason few if any responses to your need.

    You might contact gun refinishers and gunsmiths who build an occasional rifle for clients. Then ask if they do stocks only or can recco someone.

    It has been my limited experience that gunsmiths oftentimes do not want to do refinishing work. I suspect there is too little money in it.

    Refinishing many stocks is quite similar to wood refinishing in general. Accordingly, those who refinish antiques and other wood products may be someone to ask.

    In general, it is pretty easy to learn. You can buy kits for refinishing in gun stores, which have good instructions with them.

    Hi Jerry---I've always known that I'm an oddball, but so be it. I've been refinishing strictly gun stocks for over 20 years. Since you are not getting much help, I'll jump in. The big problem, is what I have to have just to break even on materials. $200 per stock is about minimum, and up to $500 for Wby etc. I'm currently doing a Rem. 600, and finished another one two weeks ago.     It's important to state if you are planning to send the entire rifle, or if you are able to remove the action & other metal yourself. The folks who just do refinishing usually do not hold an FFL, so they cannot handle complete guns.
