NEF R73 hammer issue
Picked up this revolver a few weeks ago. New England Firearms Model R73, 5 shots in 32 H&R Mag, 2" barrel. Decent little shooter, but having a problem with the hammer in single action mode. I'd say maybe 1 out of 10 times, the hammer will not stay locked back and if you take your thumb off the hammer it will fly forward and fire. Obviously a safety issue that I'd like to correct. I initially gave the firearm a good cleaning when I got it home and then again after my first trip to the range with it. The problem still persists. Any thoughts on where to start? I can't even find any schematics (sp?) on it. Someone told me the H&R Model 732 is the same platform and parts are interchangeable. Would like to confirm that if possible.

About all that I can say is that I put a barrel from a H&R Model 939 Ultra Side-Kick (.22LR) on my NEF R92 (.22LR). Then, I put the hammer from a H&R 732 (.32 S&W Long) on the same NEF R92 (.22LR). The 732 hammer makes the R92 easier to cock, but I have no idea why.[:I] The external dimensions are exactly the same, but the cocking effort has gone way down.

There could be one or more of the following problems with your R73.
1. Make certain you are not making pressure contact with the trigger when you cock it.
2. Check to see if the sear (part at the inside rear of the trigger guard) is free. Should be easy to depress and spring back fully when released.
3. Sear tip or hammer notch worn.

BigLoop, thanks for the schematic. I have a 732, but not a parts gun! I'll get with Numrich once I figure out what parts I need. I'm sure they can confirm if they are the same.
Sprint, the sear seems to be functioning properly. I'll have to look into the sear tip & hammer notch. It's an old gun, but I don't think it has been fired too much. It had sat in a gun safe for many years. I appreciate the help.0 -

Both hammers are the transfer bar-type. All hammer dimensions appear to be the same.
The reason that I swapped hammers is that I was trying to change the height & shape of the spur on my R92, but never got that far. I ground & cut the spur, but my "welder buddy" is always busy, so I decided to make my 732 a snag-free concealed revolver. My goal was to grind the remnants of the R92 hammer to match the profile of the 732. My R92 now wears the 732 hammer, and vise-versa.[;)]0
