22 MAG WRF?
I have boxes of 22 mags SX22WMR and boxes of 22 W.R.F.. What's the difference besides the W.R.F. being shorter? What does W.R.F. mean?
Thanks

trolleytrout,
Not too late to welcome you to the forum.
WRF, Winchester Rim Fire.
Operates at much lower pressure than the .22 Mag.
I believe you can fire WRF in a mag. chamber, though I've never tried.
(Too damn expensive)
And even if it would chamber, NEVER attempt to use Mag. ammo in a WRF chamber.
Hope this helps.0 -
W.R.F. = Winchester Rim Fire
It was originally chambered in some Winchester rimfire rifles in the early 20th Century. Also Colt revolvers. Although dimensionally similar to the WMRF it isn't as hotly loaded. The original rifles and revolvers shouldn't be fed a steady diet of WMRF, it won't do them any good.0 -
Besides shorter and not as hot, the WRF is usually a lead bullet, 22 Mag is jacketed. Yes, you can shoot WRF out of a WRFM (magnum) but not vice versa. 0 -
Often you can buy 22 WRF ammo cheaper than WMRF if you order online or catalog. In a pistol the performance difference is not that great. I got some on the chance that my Ruger would shoot it more accurately and either .22 LR or .22 mag but again the difference was small. I still have not found anything that the Single Six particulary likes, shoots about anything to just under 3 inch groups at 25 yards.
In the heavy slow moving slug mode the WRF 45 gr. plated flatnose bullet is probably as good as the .22 mag FMJ at penetration and not messing up pelts at a slightly lower costs.
In the hyper velocity world the WRF is no match for either the 30 gr turn a varmint inside out 22 mag or the hyper velocity .22 LR Stinger type rounds.
When I can get the WRF at a good price I pick them up, it is just a matter of value and performance matched to the right target.
To add a little more, even though an 22 rf is a poor choice for self defence, the 45 gr. WRF round is maybe the best choice if you have a short barreled 22 mag. as expansion works against penetration and the heavy bullet helps and with a 22 rf for self defence penetration is your friend. There are some 22 mag round with 45 and 50 gr bullets but they are hollow points and are hard to find.0 -
I have found that the 22 WRF in my single six is more accurate than than the 22 LR or the 22 WMRF. For what it is worth. 0
