Ruger MKI .22 pistol not cycling???

I have a Ruger MKI .22 (A-100 frame according to the serial# on Ruger's site, produced in '79). No ftf or fte, the problem is that after firing, the spent case ejects fine, the next feeds fine but its not cocking back the hammer, I have to manually pull back on the bolt. Meaning that out of 10 rounds I get to shoot 5 and cycle the other 5 just to be able to shoot. I keep it clean, I don't think thats the problem, any suggestions? thanks



update 9-23-09: replaced trigger spring and sear spring. still not acting right. if i pull the bolt back slowly it will cock but if i pull it back fast and let it snap forward it wont. any suggestions?

    what kind of ammo are you using ? have you tried different brands of ammo to see if its ammo related or the gun ?

    Besides a good cleaning and light lube, check a fired case, look for DRAG marks on the side of the casing forward of the rim. Not uncommon for a rimfire arm to develop a burr at the chamber mouth from dry firing. The burr will cause the case to drag when extracting, slow down the action. Also examine the chamber mouth. If there IS a burr there, DO NOT REMOVE IT. There is a technique to push the metal back into place. While there IS a gunsmith's tool for this job, I use a Stanley nailset.

    I'm shooting the bulk gold remington and some federal. I'm planning on trying some different kinds when I can get back to the store. I'm not sure that it is the ammo. I broke it down and gave it a good cleaning and went out to shoot it again, after the cleaning i got 7 rounds through it before it wouldn't cock the hammer. loaded up the mags again and ran into the same problem, every other round.
    I don't really see any evidence of dragging, there is a notch on the rim on the right side of the case where the extractor seems to be catching the rim to eject the case.

    I just bought a new Ruger Mark III Hunter. Beautiful gun. I'm having a simler problem as I can't get thru 10 rounds without one of the shells not ejecting. It gets hung up behind the shell that's loading. I've tried several different brands of ammo with the same results. I'm puzzeled, because it's not jaming loading, it's not cleanly ejecting. I've shot about 500 rounds thru it. Maybe that's not enough to have it broken in.

    Hello If I read your post correctly the cartridges feed correctly and eject correctly but the hammer is not cocked by the movement of the bolt caused by the cartridge head pushing back on the bolt face upon firing. Then I suggest you do this with the gun


    EDIT THIS IS DRY FIRING "UNLOADED" pull the trigger BUT still holding the triggger back cycle the bolt with your other hand in a quick snap . WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO is to simulate what happens when you shoot the pistol but with out ammo. when you fire the pistol THE bolt starts back the disconnector moves to keep the trigger from being able to trip the sear until the bolt compleats it's cycle and it cocks the hammer now when you release the trigger the disconnector moves back so the trigger is then able to trip the sear again and let the hammer fall. now see if the hammer is cocked this might take a number of tries but if the hammer does not cock and stay cocked then you could have a weak sear return spring or the disconnector could be defective. You stated you gave it a good cleaning but did you clean the fire control parts TRIGGER, Sear, etc with a spray solvent and now these parts are sticking from lack of lube. when you have the next failure eject the unfired round and closely examine the unfired shell to see if you have any sign of the hammer following the bolt and just touching the case head. DID SOMEONE TRY TO MAKE A LIGHTER TRIGGER PULL? I have seen a bunch of semi auto pistols that have been WORKED on without regards to how all the parts have to work together.

    EDIT No.II try the factory RUGER first or GUNPARTS INC. Some parts the factory may not sell you unless you are a gunsmith but I think they will do repair work on your older pistol What parts do you need. You need to EDIT your post rather then a new post each time because you only get 10 post to any question before that question is locked . you can edit by clicking on whay looks like a pencil and you can also delete any of yor post and make them as part of the original question.
