.270 WSM continued

Just that the .270 WSM is almost as fast as the .270 Wby. The .270 WSM will push light bullets almost as fast as the WBY, because of constraints on powder capacity/bore size and bore length. But when it comes to the heavier .270 bullets the WBY will pull ahead in velocity. Federal publishes velocites on their box's that are not usually close in my experience. Close enough that I would and have used them in a pinch but still not what they could be. I've noticed their velocities as of late are a little more realistic. The wind drift thing is a joke. Two of the same bullets pushed at different speeds the faster one is going to drift less. A higher BC bullet pushed slower won't drift less until it equalizes in speed with the other lower BC bullet. Most of the bullets Federal uses are about equal in BC. I can also assure you the .270 WSM isn't as fast as the Weatherby rounds.
Personally, fwiw, I think the .270 WSM is a good choice. Then again so was the .270 Win. It's problem was that it was so good to start with. The mentality was why fix what isn't broken. But, as I noted in my first post, when we start seeing 'made for long range' bullets on the shelf is when you'll see this caliber really take off.

I used the 140 gr. Accubond in both the Weatherby and the .270 WSM

Note starting velocity @ 3320 I'm very inclined to believe you will get this in a Weatherby rifle.

Their starting velocity, remember this is premium not standard, is 3200 using the same 140 gr. Accubond. I'm also not inclined to think you will get all that out of a less than 24" barrel. It may even take a 26" barrel to get that. Again, though I'm not knocking the .270 or any WSM case. I like them. They just won't shoot as hot as the Weatherby counterpart. Do you need that much? I don't. You might not either.

Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it! I know my velocity will be different as I have a 22" Barrel and I need to take it out & chronograph it and start some handloads but I'm still having trouble finding primers!
Did you read that article in the NY Times about the US Global Arms dealings and how it increased but 10.4 Billion in 2008 from 2007? No wonder why I can't find anything! They sold it all!

I am not sure if this was mentioned above, but I have read that proprietary powders which are not available to the public are used in the WSM cartridges, and accordingly, handloaders may have difficulty achieving the same velocities as some of the factory loadings.
I have also heard this same comment about Weatherby factory loadings.
Nevertheless, I would be quite happy getting .5 MOA out of the box with factory ammo. You have gotten a good one. Further, I am a firm believer that the ability to shoot overrides ballistics. Also, a good bullet overrides ballistics, but generally not as much as the ability to shoot.
I would be somewhat surprised if the 270 WSM had superior ballistics to the 270 Weatherby, especially with the heavier bullets. However, someone may prove me wrong.0 -

Yes, and you can check with nononsense (our resident encyclopedia of firearms stuff, {I mean that in a good way}) as well. He has inside sources and I know others here do too. That bullet manufacturers can get better velocities without pushing pressures as high as with the powders you and I can get off the shelf. That doesn't mean with the newer latest greatest stuff that we can't push the envelope a little.
However, in my testing, I've often found published loads to be a bit on the "optimistic" end. With Weatherby's I've generally found them pretty close. I've chronoed .240, 257, .270, .300 and .30-.378 and they've all been pretty close to what Weatherby says. The other manufacturer who remains very close to published loads is Hornady Lite-mags. I was getting exactly what I expected in many of my favorite cartridges, the .243, 6mm Rem, .257 Rob, 7x57, .308 and 30-06. Hornady is probably taking the most advantage of proprietary powders.0
