GLOCK 22 .40 S&W

I just bought a GLOCK 22 .40 S&W HANDGUN from Academy today since it was a free sales tax weekend for gun and hunting supplies. Thank goodness we elected a Republican as a governor this time around since Katrina, because we never had this happened with any democrats in the govenor's seat.

Anyway, I would like to know first what ammo should I use for self defense, and what "cheap" ammo does gun shoot good for the shooting range?

I paid $529.99 total for it, with no sales tax, and Academy does the paperwork and background check for free with purchase.

Was that a good price?

    I'm not sure if your sale price is a great deal or not, but it is in the ball park. I have found that the Speer Gold Dot 165 gr hollow point is a very reliable round for self defense...at least as far as I am concerned, it feeds 100% in my Glock 22 and has a good reputation in documented shootings in the past. As far as practice ammo goes, any full metal jacket ammo will feed reliably in your Glock, but the heavier bullet weights (180 gr) will proved you with more noticeable recoil. If you stay consistent in bullet weights for both your defense and practice ammo, your practice sessions will be more productive, (point of aim will be nearly the same.)

    I think that is a fair price. Mine has shot everything I have ever put in it I don't think you are suposed to use lead because of the rifling. I use Hornady JHP/XTP for self-defense

    Everyone can feel free to give me other suggestions about ammo, as I have never owned a gun, and would like to learn as much as possible.

    You picked a good one to start with.
    My first suggestion would be to get a conversion unit.

    If this is your first firearm, your going to need a lot of practice to become proficient with it. Converting to 22 long rifle will allow you to practice the basics extensively, without breaking your bank account.
    As for the standard S&W ammo/rounds, winchester white box would probably be your best bet for the price. You can usually find it at walmart. It doesn't make any sense to practice with all top end hollow point rounds, but you do need to practice now and then with something other than .22 if you went the conversion route.

    That addresses the basic rounds, then you get into the stopping rounds. As mentioned, Gold dots are a good option. In particular the +P variants, but these are not cheap. Any of the following rounds will get the job done, and will feed through your Glock:
    Hornady TAP CQ
    Corbon DPX
    Remington Golden Saber
    Speer Gold Dot
    Federal Hi-Shok (not hydra-shok, hydra shok has not done so well in my opinion)
    Federal EFMJ
    PMC starfire
    Winchester PDX
    Winchester SXT.

    My personal practice regime is 500 rounds of 22, 100 rounds of standard, and 40 rounds of premium per month in the 9mm and 40s&w.
    My personal pick for premium is the SXT, though I do not think it is available anymore. I have a stock of it, and should I confirm it's out of production, I'll be putting it aside.

    My opinion for what it's worth.
