Spare parts question...

I wouldn't worry about it. The one non-milspec part that you certainly have is the receiver, & you just have to live with that.

Just be sure that you have enough 7.62 mm Nato ammo, NOT .308 WIN.

EDIT: WHOA FELLAS - This has deteriorated into a general discussion; let's get back to Mike's specific question. Mike, you might want to include a USGI cleaning kit, that includes the multi-tool handle & segmented cleaning rod; not only good for maintenance, but it may help in case of a malfunction.

If the SHTF, You have what you need already. Spare parts should include
a 1911 in .45acp, a .22lr rifle, and all the ammo you can lay your hands on. Remember, If the SHTF, you are going to have all the guns and ammo from the persons you kill. There are going to be m16's and ak's
laying around to be picked up. Bob

When you say SHTF scenario, what EXACTLY do you mean?

Is that a natural disaster like Katrina where there is a relatively temporary breakdown in law and order? Nuclear war? A Zombie attack? Are you dropped alone behind enemy lines and forced to shoot your way out?

People talk about these hypothetical doomsday scenarios, but apart from the first one, its not entirely clear to me that any are too plausible.

EG: After 9-11 there was no SHTF doomsday scenario, and that was after major carnage in the middle of Manhattan! A 12 gauge shotgun and a few boxes of shells (or maybe just an SKS) was probably all you really needed to get through Katrina.

In general, I think a reasonable "survival kit" for a RIFLE (other than a sling and plenty of ammo) would include a cleaning kit, a spare extractor, firing pin, and magazine. On most guns, those are the critical parts that are most likely to fail.

Probably the absolute best "spare parts" kit would just be a second gun. It could be an identical gun, or just one in the same caliber.

Realistically, even in a catastrophe, you're pretty unlikely to fire enough rounds to induce a parts failure. If you are firing that many rounds, its probably because you're in active combat, and if so, other weapons are likely to make themselves available.

Your bigger problem is going to be toting around enough ammo to actually cause your gun to fail.

Short of being in continuous active combat, other things (eg food, water, communications equipment, fire-starting equipment, etc) are going to take MUCH higher priority than spare parts for a battle rifle.

    Beany,

Have you been in a coma the past year? The people of this land are getting sick of the corrupt government we have. Do you think it was/is by chance that ammo was/is scarce and high priced? Wal-mart shelves sometimes lack even 22LR.

News shows are even asking questions about all the private militia's that have risen in the last 3 years.

A government that is proposing mandatory health insurance, and fining you if you don't have it? What happends to the poor soul that cant afford health insurance?...plus a fine on top of that?

    take a look:

    Best

    EDIT1:

    Beantown,

Look at all the corrupt politicians. You cant pick up a news paper today and not something in it about one of them screwing someone ot thing over, then saying its legal. Both the GOP, and Dems. Seems the British done this over 225 years ago, and had a bunch of tea off loaded into Boston Horbor.

The people of this country are getting fed up with working their asses off, and having it given or taken away in the name of BIG CORRUPT GOV'T. They are getting ready to take this place back. That is what the SHTF is all about...not being attacked by anyone else but our own gov't. BTW if you don't think this clown in power or the Clintons would use WMD's on their own people to quelch a revolution, you are mistaken. That is what socialist dictators do...like Saddam, Castro, Iran, Syria....to name a few.

Mods...perhaps this needs to be reverted into the GD or POL forums.

    EDIT 2

    Beantown,

quote:That would be unprecedented in American history, and in THAT kind of scenario

Not really. You are smart enough to realize that our forefathers spilled their blood to earn you the rights granted in the Constitution of the United States of America. Our soldiers today fight to keep us free, and keep the terrorist off our shores. They are sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America, not to stand behind their corrupt bosses, and political figures who are raping($$$) us, and leading us down the path of desparity. They too were enduring to the point of no turning back.

You are right...a spring or broken firing pin are the least of our worries.

What is your definition of the human excrement hitting the rotating wind machine.

The only one i've not seen discussed much is another ban. The next ban will not be like the next i'm sure. Get enough spare parts and mags, and i would even get a second gun just to be safe.

For long term i'd even consider getting one of those cheap chinese made air rifles for foraging for small game. MUCH quieter than even a 22, and just enough to take small game in most cases.

They invariably lack .22 too in my area, but I hardly see what that has to do with anything.

What EXACTLY are you trying to say? What do YOU think is going to happen?

That the Federal gov't is so hated that within 2 years the USA is going to turn into post-apocalyptic "Mad Max" land?

I say if we survived Carter, we can certainly survive THIS clown.

And to be clear, we have more than one "government". There is local gov't. There is State Gov't. There is the Federal Gov't. There are municipal police. There are county police. There are State police. There are Federal police (multiple kinds, actually). There are State militias. There is national guard. There is US military. These agencies don't all get along, and aren't necessarily going to take orders from one another.

Do you have any idea how much destruction would be necessary to overturn *ALL* of it perpetually with NO law enforcement mechanism? That would be unprecedented in American history, and in THAT kind of scenario, believe me, having an extra firing pin for your rifle is the least of your problems.

Again, in certain jurisdictions, I could plausibly see a temporary loss of law and order due to natural or man-made catastrophe (eg Katrina, 9-11, LA riots, post-nuclear war, etc). These things HAVE happened in the recent past, and to me they are unlikely, but at least plausible "SHTF" scenarios. Even then, I think the disruption would probably last a few days, or at WORST a few weeks, and that even includes most plausible thermonuclear war scenarios.

quote:News shows are even asking questions about all the private militia's that have risen in the last 3 years.
Their job is to be alarmist and rake-muck. So what?

We were hearing noises about the "evil" militia groups 10-15 years ago under Clinton too (you remember Oklahoma City, right? Waco?). We're still here. So is Clinton. So are the militias.

quote:A government that is proposing mandatory health insurance, and fining you if you don't have it? What happends to the poor soul that cant afford health insurance?...plus a fine on top of that?

Proposing isn't the same as passing, is it? If you follow politics even a little bit, you'll know that all sorts of INCREDIBLY idiotic things get proposed, then never find their way out of committee, or get voted down. Occasionally they get passed and then subsequently reversed.

But OK, lets follow your logic. You tell me, what do YOU think is going to happen to the guy who can't afford to pay a fine for health insurance?

He's going to fire enough rounds though his M1A overthrowing the Federal gov't that he'll need extra replacement parts?

There has been a lot of ink spilled on this, but to get the the bottom line, gun control is a losing political issue for the Democrats, and they know it. They don't have the votes to "close" on this, so another major ban is effectively off the table for this Congressional session.

    Not a bad idea.

One problem with these is that unlike most real firearms, most airguns aren't perpetually durable. Generally the seals will go after a while, and without handy spars, those aren't easily replaceable.

IMO, you're probably better off with a real .22. Its far more versatile, and if you stock up on CB cap-type ammo, you can get air-gun like quietness, but with more power and the ability to get quick follow up shots.

In fact, if by definition your SHTF scenario includes a complete breakdown of law and order, who is going to be enforcing the gun control laws? Answer, probably nobody. Meaning if you were to cobble together a home-made silencer and use it for hunting, who would ever know or care?
