COLT 1908 OR BROW. 1905 (VEST POCKET)??
Went to a gun show yesterday and came home with (among other things[:D])this colt/browning. When I bought it I assumed it was just a beater colt 1908 but... just the grips are marked 'COLT'. It is a very early gun, ser. #7142. Did Colt buy the 1st one from Bowning (similar to their deal with Astra & the Colt Junior)? Or do I have a Browning with Colt grips?

Browning with Colt grips. With that low of a serial number, has to be first year of production. Colt didn't start making them until 1908. Your's would date to 1906, at the latest.
Browning's licensing deal with F.N. provided that Colt had North American rights to build and sell his pistols. F.N. had the rest of the world.
If F.N. were able to have sold their pistols over here, there would be a lot of their Model 1900's, ( First successful .32 automatic, sold in large quantities ), floating around with Colt grips/markings.0 -
