which should I purchase

I am wanting to add the must two have hunting rifles to my growing gun collection, my question is with only being able to purchase one due to being in college should i purchase a Rem model 700 or the winchester model 70. Which rifle will be growing in price at a faster rate? I would like to purchase that one while i can afford it.

    Growing in price? Pre-64 Model 70. All bets are off after that. If you go with the Rem, look for a mid-to late 80's rifle at the latest, quality drops off after that. If you want to be sure of making a profit, buy a CD instead.

    I second HeDog if you are looking for strictly investment. If you are going to use it hunting, then you might want to rethink about the pre-64 Model 70. If you are going to use it ard, then I suggest a Classic Model 70. For real deal hunting, I might suggest the Tikka T-3. It is about as smooth and strong as it gets.

    Like they said, if its for investment get the pre-64 M70, but be prepared to pay 1k+. I dont know if thats in the college budget. You might want to go with a pre-64 M94 lever gun, you can get in to a nice one for half of the 70 and still have a collector. You dont get many shots over 100yds in WV anyway. [;)]

    Im not looking to make a profit off any firearm, I sincerely enjoy owning/shooting/ having a part of the history in a firearm. I was strickly asking which rifle of the two would be growing in price faster so I can purchase that one while I have the funds available. With that said thanks for most of the input.

    The Winchesters are a little more expensive than the Remingtons are right now but neither one seems to be posed for major price increases currently. Both are overpriced for the value but are in line with the economics of the trade.

    My suggestion would be to check the Auction side for classic Mauser M98 variants in a cartridge of your choice. There are commercial Mausers available as opposed to the military versions. These are often very reasonably priced and excellent hunting rifles. They are classic rifles that will be appreciated by hunters everywhere and not just the same humdrum Remchesters.

    Another commercial choice would be a CZ550. These are an excellent value.

    I agree with nononsense as far as that goes..

    I also would recomend one of the following rifles from a utilitarian point of view: S&W I-bolt, Savage 110/111, husqvarna, mossberg, Savage/Stevens 200, Marlin XL7, or Howa 1500

    I know what you mean when you say, "I want to buy one when I can afford one." buy what you can afford right now. In my budget that's a Savage. Which is pretty much the most accurate off the shelf rifle you can get. Especially the varmint/tactical(FP) models.

    Sometimes in life you go through a phase when you ask why you're paying so much for a name. I've gone through phases where I wanted a Springfield M1A in the worst way, then suddenly I spent all the money I saved on finishing up a custom Mauser Project. And it shoots extremely well. I had a couple grand saved up to buy a new commercial Mauser M98....then Rheinmetall sold the line to Sig. They went from a couple grand to over ten grand. I didn't see the need in buying one anymore. Winchesters were always high but they went through the roof when the New Haven plant closed. Even the WSSM's, that after the initial "wow" wore off and they wouldn't sell, went way above what anyone thought. And they sold because people thought they would be the last Winchesters they could get. Now, they make them again and they run in the $800+ plus for just a rifle.

    FWIW, I would get a Savage model 12 of what you liked in .223 And when you got enough again get a big game cartridge such as the .30-06.
    Or, as nn noted, there are a ton of 'customized' Mausers that shoot really good in a number of cartridges that can be had for under $500.

    It is not so much as what you buy as what you pay for it. I had a young friend who for a number of years bought and sold a few cars, always bought low and sold for more than he paid even after driving it for a while. He was not always driving the coolest car but he always traded up.

    I suggest that you look for a good deal on a use rifle any good rifle and look to sell it for more than you paid because you got it for a good price and did not hurt it.
