AR-10 Info
Here's what's going around my head. I'd like an AR-10 in .308, but would like something with a bit more ooomph for bear or elk in the future. I like the DPMS .300 saum, but it's a heavy gun. Has anyone had their AR-10 .308 chambered by a gunsmith for a more powerful caliber, or taken a DPMS .300 saum upper and lighten it up? Thanks MJ

Yes, as a matter of fact, DPMS and several others have come to the table with the 260 Remington, and the 338 Federal. They are capable of taking the the larger game just as well as the SAUM.

+1 on TSR's post.
Both Armalite and DPMS offer the 338federal chambering in their AR-10s.. Also a custom builder like accuracy sytems could make you something more specific to your needs.
I am sure a good machinist could turn the barrel, but the effects it would have on harmonics, I couldnt say.0 -
There are a few folks on falfiles.com that have converted their FALs (or built them up) in 8mm mauser, 358 winchester and other larger calibers like that. The limit is the magazine length.
On the AR-10, without the adjustable gas system, I would think you could do something similar but I'm not sure what other mods would be needed. Also not sure how you'd get a barrel. The FAL guys use Remington 700 barrels and re-thread, drill for gas hole, etc.0 -
Have you looked at the Bushmaster 450? Here's a link
