Got a Mosin NAgant 91/30.

And it's a beauty! The grooves and lands of the rifling look excellent, all the serial numbers match up, and all the cleaning parts came with it.

My next step will probably be to drill and tap it for an original Russian PU scope.(l was going to go with a new version, but they replaced the sights! l like the two-lines-and-an-arrow sight)

So what's the going rate for having someone Drill and Tap a MN? l want to make sure l don't get swindled. :(

Also, if they suck at it, is there a chance they could ruin my rifle? l'm actually pretty worried about putting it in the hands of someone l don't know.

    I think to mount the PU type sight you need more work than simply drilling and tapping the side of the receiver.

    You also have to relieve (ie remove) some wood from the stock so the mount can fit. See here:

    I think you'll also need to bend the bolt down to clear the scope when working the action.

    There are different individuals who have a cottage industry in doing this. (IE you send them your bolt, they bend it and send it back to you). Alternatively, you can buy a pre-bent bolt body for about $70. I've heard too many horror stories about the screw-in ATI bent bolt handle to suggest going that route. If you're going to do this, you might as well get it welded on properly.

    The drilling/tapping and relieving the stock aren't rocket science, though if you're going to pay someone else to do these things for you, I'd suggest reserving the job for either someone who's done it before, or alternatively an experienced gunsmith.

    I don't think doing this wrong is likely to make the gun unsafe, but it certainly could ruin its appearance. (Then again, how wrong can you go with an $90 shooter?).

    I can't tell you how much a drill/tap costs since that's going to depend on the rate of your local gunsmith. Personally, I'd never pay more than $100 [edit, that's including the stock modification]. At that rate you might as well just buy a drill/tap set and a second gun to practice on, and do it yourself!

    If you don't care about the reproduction look, but just want "a" receiver mounted scope on the gun, the ATI mount will let you put a regular scope on the gun without having to alter the stock. (You'll still have to have the bolt bent down to work the action).

    This mount has the disadvantage of no longer being able to use stripper clips. Whether or not that's really a disadvantage depends on you. Most of the new-manufacture Mosin clips are garbage and don't work well.

    The charges may vary depending on where you live- but would expect $50 or less.

    CAN someone screw up your rifle doing a D&T for a scope? Yes. Drill in the wrong place, drill thru into chamber, etc etc. I put my firearms in the hands of gunsmiths that do this for a living, have been doing it for a living, have the equipment to do it (not a Black & Decker 1/4 inch drill)- which is why you pay them.

    I'm not putting a scope on mine but I am having 2 bolts done by these guys. Might be worth a look for you.

    DracoOccisor...I went through the same procedure several years ago with my Tula Mosin 1943. Got a 1943 PU 3.5 with correct mount and went to my gunsmith for mounting. Suggest you go to a good smith to do the work. If you don't know one, ask some friends who they would recommend or go to a local gun shop and ask for suggestions. I have used the same guy for years and he does quality work. Sounds like you have a nice rifle so why screw it up with a cheap job. I learned a long time ago that you pay for what you get and you can't beat quality. And you will need a turned down bolt and your stock will have to be modified to take the PU mount (as in the beantownshootah pic). Recommend you do it right and you will be happy with the results. My Tula has always made me happy at the range! Good shooting!

    Thanks alot guys, those are all great suggestions. lt's a really nice rifle, so l'll make sure l get someone who knows what they're doing.

    My local gunsmith said he couldn't help me, so l may have to drive a while to get a proper job done on it. However, l'm fairly certain l've seen a PU mount on a Mosin without relieving the stock like that. Am l mistaken?

    l also bought a whole separate bent bolt several days ago. lt's quite a smooth action. Thanks for all the help guys.
