German K98 8MM Mauser
I have a vet bring back from WWII. Made in Yugoslavia I believe. It was passed down by my great grandfather. All serial numbers match, rifle is in GREAT condition firing and cosmetic.
The rifle does not have any extras such as bayonet ect.
I'm interested in selling it ( I have many guns passed down ) but I wish to auction this one off. I am looking for advice on a good starting price. Or how much the gun might be worth.

One other thing, does anyone have any suggestion's as far as where to get a box to ship it in. I obviously do not want to ship a gigantic box when I only need one of proper length. 0 -
Pictures, code, condition, duffle cut/not etc would be necessary to put any value on it 0 -
A K98 48 can be had with all equipment from Mitchell's Mausers for $299 and they are notoriously inflated. You should be able to get $150-$175 if in fine condition for just the rifle. 0 -
If you live in/near a fairly good size town,there should be Box stores that sell boxes of all sizes. I believe UPS and Fedex do the same. I've used boxes that the long tube Floresent lights come in. 0 -

Tell us what is stamped onto the left side of the receiver. (If Yugo, the market was recently flooded with "as new" rifles).
Look carefully on the barrel, just behind the front sight mount. Anything stamped there? Thanks, Joe

After reading your post below, it's a Yugoslavian M48. Due to the recent flood of these guns onto the retail market, you may realize about fifty-dollars more than the recent ones that have an import stamp on the end of the barrel. I'd venture about $275.00. Stress "Not Import Stamped" if you were to sell. Good Luck! Joe0 -
Ontop of the receiver is a crest with M48 stamped under it. On the left side of the receiver it has ?,D??_j D??_D'y3EhE 44 (I did the best i could typing russian on my US keyboard).
Gun was not duffle cut, and is in Very good condition as stated before. there are two dings in the stock, but overall the teak wood is in excellent condition. Bore is very clean, rifling in tact.
anything else ? Oh after some thinking on what else i was told about the gun and I remembered Zastava Fry...not sure if that is where it came from or not. Id post pictures but my camera is out of commission.0 -
If the gun was made in (the former) Yugoslavia, then by definition it can't be German, can it?
Anyway, right now Yugoslavian Mausers in excellent condition are cheap and plentiful, and don't have much collectors value.
As mentioned, yours may be worth a *little* more without import marks, but not nearly as much as a true German Mauser bring-back would be.

Post lots of pictures and let the market see what you have.
As far as the box, get a razor and a glue gun and MAKE the proper size box from a refridgerator carton. You may use a saw if needed.0 -
The M48 was made from 1950 to 1965. It was made in four versions. m48a (all milled parts) M48b (stamped floor plate) then they started to increase there stamped parts. But there is a rare M48bo. The bo stand for no markings they where made new and from captured k98's, that were scrubbed. Know the company that made them was Zastava under the name Preduzece 44 from 1945 to 1952 before it was renamed Red. So if it was a vet bring back it may have been a early prototype or maybe ones made before they were made for market. Or something like that. Or it may not be a vet bring back. The best thing to do is post pics and plenty of them, and we'll figure out what you got there. 0 -
Go to your local golf shop(s). Boxes for shipping clubs work great for rifles. 0
