Colt DA Revolver

I'd like some info on this gun. Don't know anything about it. I'm guessing it's a 44/40 cartridge. Thankscolt441.jpg

    In order to complete the ID, lease get back to us with any stampings on the gun (no matter how small, no matter how insignificant). It will help a lot. It's probably a Colt Lightning, or if it's around .45cal, it's a Colt Thunderer. If you [comply with above], we'll tell you the age and if possible, how many were produced.

    It's a Model 1878. You can do a google search and find some basic info. If you have more specific questions ask them here. We don't charge by the word.

    Number on bottom of grip above "lanyard hole" are
    23 atop 843

    There is also 179 stamped in ejector cover

    Top of barrel in front of frame is stamped
    COLT'S ?*?*?* MFG CO
    HARTFORD CT U.S.A.

    ?*?*?* represent letters I can't make out

    I now believe it is a 45 Colt cartridge not 44/40

    By the serial number it was made about 1889. The ?*?*?* you can't make out is "Patent Firearms" (In other words, "Colt's Patent Firearms Mfg. Co...."). The assembly number "179" should match a number on the frame when you take off the grips.

    You can get a factory letter from Colt (for a fee) which will likely tell who it was shipped to originally, which in most cases was just a large distributor or gun dealer.

    45 CAL is stamped in the left side of triggerguard.

    The front sight looks strange; does it look like barrel might have been shortened?

    The sight has not been altered. It's the angle of the photo.

    If the barrel is 4 3/4 or 5 1/2" long from barrel end to cylinder front
    it is standard length unless it was reduced from 7 1/2".
    The front sight was filed lower to sight it in.
