Beginner Target gun?

I was thinking about getting my 7 year old an Anschutz achiever. What do you guys think, or any other suggestions?

    I Think that is an awesome choice. The stock length of pull, can be added to or subtracted from as the child grows. I have an Anschutz "Woodchucker" in 22WMR, and would not sell it for anything. It is a very short, handy TACK driver. I have had many gracious offers for it, but never accepted any. I had a guy even offer me a Cooper Montana Varminter Model 38 in 17 Fireball for it.

    Either way, it is hard to beat a model 64 based Anschutz at these prices. If you have nice equipment, and the kids can actually make consistant hits, it will keep them interested.

    These are real good prices for these rifles.

    Saw a 'Cricket' in the gun store looks like it would be just bright for a 7 year old. Look into it. Here's one on the auction side:

    I hate to say it, but that's almost TOO good for a first gun. They're not cheap, though if you can find a good used one. . .why not? You could definitely do a lot worse.

    Personally, I'd save this as a reward for the kid after mastering a lesser gun, or if he/she were actually formally competing.

    Also while these rifles are intended for children, they're not really intended for SMALL children. Make sure it fits your kid before shelling out the money.

    In terms of other guns, the Cricket was already mentioned. For what it is (a single-shot rifle designed as a first firearm for a small child), they're not bad.

    Pretty much any single-shot bolt action rifle could work. At worst, you'd have to cut down the stock to fit the kid, but that shouldn't be too hard.

    I have considerable experience with the Achiever. It's best for kids 9-10 years old. A seven-yr-old can probably shoot it from rest without a problem.

    I say start the kid out with something like a Mossberg 44

    Just some thoughts from an "old coot", but when I was 7 years old, my Dad bought a "Daisy Red Rider" for me. It was cheap to shot and I got a lot of practice. I learned gun safety and marksmanship. I could use it in places where a .22 was too powerful or too loud. I got so good with it, I could put out candle set up in the coal bin in the basement of our house. --- Just a suggestion ---

    Thanks for the input. The weight and size of the Achiever was a concern of mine and I didn't have one around to ahndle first hand. A remington 540x-jr was also a thought, but they seem to run more money and harder to find. I did see that auction for the Anschutz, he seems a little high in price. They seem to bring around 300-350 on the auctions. I do have a Cricket here I was going to use till I found something else. I just wanted to get here something good and hope that she likes it. Due to medical condition she really can't do many sports. If she doesn't like it, I have a younger son. So it will get used again. When she would grown out of the Achiever or something else, I have a 54 I used in school that was cut down and had an adjustable length of pull added and from their if she really likes it(cross my fingers and hope) I can move her up into my super match. Any other thoughts? Keep them coming!!!

    I think a Winchester 75 target model is a great starter rifle and they can be found in pretty much new condition. A CZ 452 target model is a great choice in the factory new gun category.

    dfletcher, the Winchester 75 is indeed a great target rifle, but not for a seven-year-old. The M75 is too heavy even for a ten-year-old. There's nothing worse than starting a kid with a gun that's too big/heavy for him.
