Good deal? or pass on it.

A friend at work has offered me a Stainles Steel Ruger Blackhawk 44mag with a 10" barrel for $150.00. The catch is that the cylinder will rotate when cocked, but will not lock. Could this be an expensive repair? And would it be better to take it to a local gunsmith or send it to Ruger? What would the pistol be worth after being repaired and does the 10" barrel make it more, or less desireable? He told me the pistol has had about a thousand rounds thru it and he's throwing in two boxes of ammo.

    Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    The longer barreled guns are great for guys who are going to scope them and hunt with them. For the guy that is going to carry one on his hip, they are highly undesirable...in my opinion, and I have had it both ways. For resale purposes, it is going to be harder to get rid of the longer barrel too. For a gun in this condition, the asking price is not worth it. It has in my opinion, been abused(unless he has had it apart and lost something it needs), as even at 1000 rounds it should not be like this. I would pass on it, unless I could get it for $100.00, and then it is questionable if Ruger could do anything with it.

    That answers the other Question. If you send it to Ruger, they will rebuild it like new unless something is really screwed up, and they will do it for a very reasonable price. If they cannot do anything with it, they will notify you, and most likely offer you an option to buy a new one at a factory discounted price. Let us all know how you make out.

    I bought a used one with a shorter barrel a few years ago for $250, it broke right away. I shipped it to Ruger and they fixed it for free. It only cost me the overnight shipping.

    Ruger will normaly repair it for free. Will only cost shipping. Buy it before the guy changes his mind!

    Might just be a broken spring for the locking bolt and or the hand/pawl worn. Maybe he had it apart and put it together wrong.

    Grab it quick, it's nothing that can't be fixed. You could part it out and get your money back if needed.

    I'd say get it as well. It's a good deal even if you had to pay for some repairs. Re-sale of it might be a crapshoot. But you never know. Savage 99's didn't go for much until just after 2001. Then they took off. With the current economic situation all but the very best, most pristine have dropped in price. It could be the same for these.

    Take the gun and run. The fix cannot be serious. It's most likely a small cylinder locking bolt return spring.
    Ruger is very liability conscious as they were bitten big time in a Blackhawk accident a while back, leading to a large settlement and a mod kit for their single action revolvers.
    As a result, they are very generous in a repair that could avoid another injury. If the gun has real problems which is extremely unlikely, they will probably give you a new gun gratis. That's what they did to me on an old Blackhawk 25 years in my gun safe.
    Contact customer service after you buy (steal) the gun and lay the problem in their lap.
    After they're done giving you an RMA, query them on changing or cutting the barrel to 6 1/2, 5 1/2 or 4 3/4".
    Get back to us with how you made out.

    Heck, just the two boxes of AMMO together are worth $60.

    Its like getting the gun for $100. . .that's a steal.

    In general a 10" bbl makes the gun *LESS* sellable (fewer people will want to buy it), but it *DOES* make the gun better for hunting or shooting at distance (eg steel plates, etc).

    In terms of fixing it. . .just send it to Ruger. They'll either fix it for nothing, or for a nominal amount. Your biggest expense will probably just be getting it shipped there. Unfortunately, that won't be cheap, but even if it runs you $50, that's still not bad in terms of overall cost.

    In terms of value AFTER its been fixed, that's a bit harder to say, since it depends on the condition, etc, but you have to figure ANY functional Ruger Blackhawk .44 magnum in Stainless is going to be worth $300, if not more.
