Trip to California ????

Colt Super
Tomorrow, I depart to visit my Son Steve and his Family in Fernley, Nevada, thence to Sacramento to visit Friend John Rowland.

And maybe some GB Friends if invited.

I want to take the following firearms:

AK-47
Mini-14
Mossberg 500
Model 29
1911 .38 Super
10/22
Beretta .32ACP TomCat
Single Six convert
Henry .22 Magnum Golden Boy

Ammo and mags as appropriate for all.

What firearm related problems might I expect to encounter, if any ??

    The AK-47.

    The Mini-14 if you have a magazine greater than 10 rds.

    Chances of something actually happening? I would say small.

    CA has an AW ban that is basically broken down into two parts. A specific firearm is banned by name or a semi auto centerfire rifle or handgun is banned by feature.

    If your AK is banned by name you can't bring it into CA. If it is not banned by name you can configure it with a fixed mag (easy to do and temporary) and bring it in.

    By way of example, a standard Mini 14 is no problem. But if the Mini 14 has a pistol grip stock or a flash hider that is an AW by configuration and illegal.

    So the safe answer is you can't bring the AK and you can't bring in any greater than 10 round capacity magazines for anything, not even the 10/22.

    The more adventureous answer would be that when traveling from OR through CA with NV as your destination, you are as a CA nonresident covered by this federal law: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode18/usc_sec_18_00000926---A000-.html

    It is federal law, but CA law is sufficiently screwed up and (with due respect to our many hard working LE folks) there are more than a few CA working LE members who may not know the specifics of the law, but have been trained by the higher ups that "AW = prohibited" and nothing else. I don't know that you want to run into a State Trooper somewhere around Lassen or Dunsmuir and have to give him you sales pitch. I think you'd be right, but you might be in a no win situation for a while and/or lose the guns.

    Now having said all that, if you are driving from OR through CA and shooting on private land you'd probably have no problems. CA residents have all sorts of legal AWs and literally hundreds of thousands of what look like standard AKs, ARs and FALs and HKs and you'll mix in with the other shooters. If you go to a public range I doubt anyone is going to notice. If you go on BLM land and run into LE they'll probably notice as will most regular LE.

    The safe bet is of course follow the law.

    my son who lives in Alabama just recently made a trip to Commiefornia but stopped here in Arizona to visit and leave his AR-15, two other long guns and three handguns mags with me, he lived in C'fornicators for 8 years prior to this visit, he told me visitors must carry the mags and ammo where the driver of the vehicle can NOT have ready access, gun in vehicle, ammo and mags in trunk, BUT !! gun and ammo can NOT both in trunk, if a pickup truck the ammo and mags must be locked securely and in a container that can not be easily/readily removed, like welded to the P.U.s bed, the gun must be unloaded, locked open if semi-auto, single actions must have cylinder removed, D.A. revolvers must have the cylinder "blocked" open, rifles, bolt removed, lever actions, open, semi-auto, locked open but certain models must be broken down as in the case of an AR-15 upper separated from lower (those evil black guns can reassemble themselves) then he said visitors can only have three guns unlike each other, he had his one pistol in a lock box under the hood and mags and ammo in the cab.

    please keep in mind this is all and only hearsay, take nothing from this as legal or reliable information or advice, i recommend calling the state attny. generals office ask, also ask if they have a "Guide Book" with visitors carrying weapons information

    I dunno bout having the bolt removed business-that wasn't a requirement when I lived there but the keeping handgun separate from the ammo was. Be aware that Sacramento is not a gun owner friendly area in regards to LEO's-especially the Highway Patrol.

    As others have said-if you were just travelling through then not really an issue-but if you are going to be shooting then leave the AK at home and if you have the 5 rounder for the Mini-14 then just take that. The other issue you may run into is packing the handguns in CA--they must be unloaded and in a locked container OTHER than a glove box or center console--forget about carrying concealed unless you are 100% sure you won't get pulled over-the least you will lose is the gun-might go home with a fine or even a felony depending on how the charges are filed in the great[xx(] state of CA--geez I'm glad I left that goofy state. Here is just a blurb from the penal code

    Carrying Unregistered Loaded Handguns
    Any person who commits the crime of carrying a concealed handgun and ammunition for that
    handgun on his/her person or in his/her vehicle may be subject to a felony enhancement if the
    handgun is not on file (registered) in the Department of Justice's Automated Firearms System.
    (Penal Code ? 12025.)
    Any person who commits the crime of carrying a loaded (not necessarily concealed)
    handgun on his/her person in a prohibited place may be guilty of a felony if the handgun is not on
    file (registered) in the Department of Justice's Automated Firearms System. (Penal Code ? 12031.)

    Thanks for all the good advice.

    Stay at homes will be the Mini and the AK.

    I guess the Calico 22 is out of the question.

    What a shame.

    I loved shooting in California wilderness areas, when I lived there.

    It's amazing, but almost every point in your post is incorrect. The only requirement for transporting a handgun is that it be unloaded and in a locked container. Rifles and shotguns do not have to be locked but must be unloaded. One exception is for registered assault weapons which must be in a locked container. There is no requirement to lock up ammunition or to keep it out of reach of the driver.
