Marking alterations

Just wondering if anyone knows what is legal/illegal when it comes to altering or removing the markings on a handgun? More specifically I have a war production Walther PP that apparently was assembled from parts as the slide is marked differently than the frame. The pistol also has a number of importer markings. Obviously the serial numbers cannot be altered but could all the importer markings and other add-ons be eliminated. I'd leave the crown-n and other proof marks. It's probably cost prohibitive ( a little micro-welding and grinding/polishing) but I do like this little .32 and wouldn't mind having it cleaned up a bit.

    every thing but the serial number is yours to do what you want. I would leave the makers name. . Be careful about welding near high pressure/load area.

    A friend had a similar PPK, but he just sent it away & had it plated with an industrial finish; the gun looks great, & you don't even notice the markings.

    Don't think you can remove the importer marks, but I also don't think it is as much of a no-no as removing the serial...

    Serial numbers can not be removed or altered, that is a felony. Import markings are only needed to bring the gun into the United States, once it is here there is nothing in the regulations that prohibits you from removing or altering those markings.
