Smith and Wesson Model 48-4

I am looking at a Smith and Wesson Model 48-4, made in the early 70's.
It has the right side w/ large s&w logo, screws and is in probably 90% condition.
I just wanted to get some input on what a fair offer would be on it.
It has the 4 " barrel, nickel, w/ stock wood grips.

    A 4" K-22 in Nickel, would be a really rare bird if factory original.

    Never new one existed, or laid eyes on one?

    I'm sure it would be really desirable to a collector if it can be established as being factory original.

    If it is, I don't know how you could price it as you would be hard put to find a comparable piece that has been sold. Depends on the cosmetic condition a lot. If the nickel finish has been flaked off or degraded, it has a very negative affect on collectors value.

    Would the grip frame have a "N" on it??? You would need to take off the grips to see.

    The 48-4 came out in 1977 and was made until the end in 1986.
    Nickel model were factory but not cataloged and bring a premium over blue ones. Give us the first part of the serial number and we can give you the exact year it was made.

    sounds like some pretty good news. as far as I can tell the pistol is factory nickel, but I am not a real experienced collector. The beginning of the serial # is- 85. I guess it was made in '85. I took off the grips and I found a LOT of stamped letters and numbers. Let me know where on the gun to look once the grips are off. There is a T in a circle. There is also a G in a triangle. What would be a rough offer if the gun is in 85-90% condition?

    Where did you find that number [?] The serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame. It should start with 10K-311K depending on year made.

    EDIT, 85K was made in 1980.
    Value without box and papers, $550-600 [?]

    That is what it started with...85k - I just figured that the 85 stood for 1985

    So what do you think about a value? It has a little wear, but there is no flaking of the nickel, no big scratches. Is there any way to find out how many of these were made in 1980 / or IF they were ACTUALLY factory made. -like I said- I am not a pro, but I inspected the gun with a small flashlight, and I can not find any flaws in the finish that would make me think that it would be aftermarket.

    Ok- here is a picture of the pistol. Does anyone know who to contact or where I can go to find out if this gun is factory nickel?

    Your gun is definitely factory nickel. Looks like your opinion of the condition is correct. This gun would bring a premium because of the combination of the unusual barrel length and nickel finish for this model. I wouldn't take a penny less than $650.00 for it....especially the way S&W revolvers have gone through the roof in value lately.
