I just bought a Marlin 1894. I'm looking for some recommendations for replacement sights. I don't want to mount a scope, or anything that uses the scope mount screw holes, and a tang mount is not a consideration. I waited months for the gun and love it but the sights leave a lot to be desired for these OLD eyes. The barrel is dovetailed for a rear sight. I punched out the stock rear sight and it's approximately .365 at the base, .690 wide and @ 3" long. At its lowest adjustment, the v-notch is @1/4 above the Top of the Barrel. I do most of my shooting with good light and at, or less than, 100 yards. However, that's not to say low-light hunting conditions are not a consideration and visibility against a dark background is a priority. The factory sights are pathetic in that respect. I've searched the net and as yet have not found anything that specifically says it's a compatible replacement for the existing dovetails or front sight screw holes. Surely someone here has the same problem. Can anyone recommend a compatible front and rear-sight combo that's easier to see, and its source, that I can install? What I would like to find is a rear sight, with windage and elevation screws, that will fit the barrel dovetail.
The front sight has a blade sight dovetailed to a 2-screw ramp base, which also holds the hood. I haven't removed it yet. Measuring the dovetailed blade in place: best guess is .370 at base by .375 high. The "bead" is @ .405 above the TOP of the Barrel. Barrel diameter is @ .640.

A few years ago (and maybe still), Marlin recommended the Ashley receiver sight. I put one on a .357 M94 and love it. I did have to install a bit taller front sight however. 0 -
I put Ashley sights on my 336 Texan. The rear peep mounts in the rear scope mount holes.
Look up Williams Sights, they make dove tail replacement sights with fiber optics in them. My old eyes see them good.
EDIT I found a Marlin rear, screw adjustable sight, in my stash of parts. I thinf it was made bt Millet.

I have bid on a few on the auction side with these sights and it seems to have made them worth more than the average which is not always the case with gun mods. Many times you can add what you want but not necessarily get your money out of them but this seems to be a different story. 0 -
I have the same in 45 Colt and use a Lyman (17?) globe front sight and a peep rear sight. It's probably a Williams rear, mounts on the left side and I use a Merit adjustable peep. Works absolutely perfect, I keep the rear sight base stowed in a cut out in the stock under the buttplate because I usually use a scope. But having good vision the peep/globe set up is every bit as accurate as the scope out to 100 yds, which even with hot reloads is a bit of a stretch for the 45. I usually do 50 yds, it's a great set up. Brownells has all the items. I really think it's the best way to go for target and plinking and for hunting you can switch out the round insert for a post. 0 -

glabray: While searching for the Ashley Receiver sight manufacturer I found, somewhere, someone stated they loved the sight but if they had it to do today they'd go with a Williams Sight. I never did find a manufacturer for "Ashley Sights" for some reason.
dcs shooters: Thanks for the heads-up on Williams Sights. After the above recommendations I visited their site. I called (1-800-530-9028 or 810-653-2131) and spoke to Steve in the tech section. I ordered the "336 rifle set" (Stock #: 60217) from the catalog (http://www.williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/pdf/2009Catalog.pdf) which should serve my purpose. If it does, I'm getting another set for the .44 and I just MIGHT also order an "FP-336 Standard" for the 45-70 GS even though I really didn't want to go to a receiver mount.
WCI: I've never even noticed one with after-market sights.
dfletcher: I really didn't want to go to a receiver mount but for the 45-70 that's the only option I saw for improved sights. I found both the Lyman globe front sight and the Merit adjustable peep at Midway. I like that Globe sight but then we're talking about a new base also. After talking with Steve if I use the FP-336 I may or may not have to replace the front sight blade. I find it difficult to believe I wouldn't but he said mount it and sight it in to determine the height of a replacement fire sight blade. Depending on load and range I may need to adjust the height of the front blade up or down a bit. The 45-70 isn't an everyday shooter and the sights are adequate under most circumstances so far, so, I haven't decided it's worth the expense to change them at all. I may just talk myself out of that idea completely.

Although, in my younger years I had a relationship with a famous Wild Game Bird and another known as the "Dirty Bird", it wasn't them. As far as the "Wagon Wheel" user name, I changed to it after my original apparently offended an over-sensitive member.
