Becoming a FFL holder

Simple Man
I'm sick of dealing with FFL dealers that live 20 miles from my home. Is it hard becoming a FFl holder.

    Their are two common categories, of FFL licensees. "01" general dealer in firearms, and "03" Curio & Relic collector.

    As long as your interested/collect guns that are over 50 years old, or on the BATF's Curio & Relic list, you would be much better off obtaining a "03" type license from the feds. It's much more difficult and expensive getting/qualifying for a "01" firearms dealers license.

    Take this from a previous FFL holder. I held a license for 20 years, untill last year.

    If you are not going to do this for PROFIT, and have an actual store front(even if it is special order only), it is not worth it. If you do it out of your residence, you are opening your home up to BATFE audit and inspection at any time they want. If you do not have the proper safety precautions, and zoning board approval, you will not get a license. If you do not show a significant amount of business to people other than yourself, they will revoke your license. In all, if you are not doing it for a business to make money, the hastles are not worth it.

    If you go to the gunbroke auction side, and look up transfer dealers in your area, I would be willing to bet there some inside of 10 miles or less.

    You were right, there's one inside of a mile. He works out of his home and has night hours and weekends. It may be the right choice other than having the goverment crawl up my $^*%$#. Thanks for the help.

    I was a FFL holder for 10 years while residing in Seattle. The ATF never bothered me but the city of Seattle came after me for not having a business license and failing to collect and pay sales tax! The only transactions i used my license for were personal but that did not seem to matter.Let someone else deal with the bureucratic morons.Just my opinon.

    I had a FFL for 20 years dealt out of my home had a state sales tax number and collected and paid the state sales tax. Had to get a second hand ( pawn ) license required by the city where I lived because this was required to receive or sell guns that people traded in. Any used guns taken in trade had to have their serial numbers given to the local PD to have them checked to see if they were stolen. Cleared the zoning restrictions by being a non stocking dealer ( as far as guns went) mail order only ( no gun inventory ) but I could have an inventory of every thing else. Never had the ATF over to my house for dinner. Had the local PD over to check out a Tec 9 that I had sold but nothing ever became of it. Then all of a sudden the city seemed to have a discrepency with the ATF regs. relating licenses and did away with all FFL's in town. Store front or not. I still retain my state tax number and my business name I just can't sell guns. I can still buy my items whole sale so it helps to have a tax number. Would I do it again probably but just not where I live now.
