Info on an M1 Garand

Can anyone tell me how I go about getting the back story on a certain serial numbered M1 Garand. I got a story that says my garand was built in 1953 with a 1946 reciever but never made it out of the warehouse. I am the third owner and would like to know if this story is true. Thanks

  Since the last WW2 M1 rifle receiver was made in October 1945, that makes it likely that at least part of the story is not true. We can usually tell when a receiver was made based on the serial number.
  
  While there is really no way to follow the "history" of most rifles, we can tell a lot based on photos of all parts & markings. If you would like to post photos, we may be able to figure out exactly what you have.

  A serial number is absolutely vital for determining the production date. We only get ten responses on Ask The Experts and without fail we waste half of them just trying to beat some very basic information out of the guy asking the question.
  
  We need a serial number and the numbers on any of the parts that you can manage to find as well as the date stamped on the barrel (which I am guessing is going to be 1953).

  M1 rifles were being built on newly manufactured receivers as late at 1956 or 1957. If the receiver dates it to 1946 I would strongly suspect it was rebarreled with the 1953 barrel. Buy the gun, not the story.
