Shine up an old gun

What is the best way to shine up an old 38 revolver without going through a blueing?

  If you take some 0000 steel wool and lightly, with some oil, give it a rub down. You will get some of the rust off. Any pitting, heavier rust, or miss colorization probably won't come off.
