Scope Mounting a M1-A

I see all these different scope mounts available for the M1A rifle, is there one that is better than the others? Do they require any drilling/tapping? Thanks for any guidance!

    If you are looking for good mounts there is ARMS, Smith, and Sadlak.

    I like the Sadlak and have the Airborne model on mine. With it you are still able to use the open sights. While it is a great mount, for my application I would use the ARMS next time. Since mine is set up as a "target" gun I would like my scope lower and the ARMS would do that.

    I think the M1A holds the record for cheap (and not so cheap) lousy scope mounts and in general being a PITA to scope.

    I've use the Sadlak (alloy) and it was great on an M1A Loaded. Sits a bit high I think, but not too much. I currently have an ARMS on a M1A Scout and it sits nice and low, solid and looks like it's part of the gun. Note: ARMS has a weaver railed mount avialable that uses standard weaver rings. There's a one piece mount out there, can't recall the name (Basset, Barrett?) from a fellow out of Texas that suppsedly works well. ProMag also makes a copy of the ARMS, not sure how well it works.

    I'd stay away from the $29.99 alloy mounts, I've not heard of them working well.

    In general, the M1A scope mounts are a no drill set up. They use the center screw as an anchor with the stripper clip guide as a 2nd anchor point. I found the instructions on almost every M1A mount make it sound as though attaching the scope mount is about as easy and certain as launching the space shuttle, but it's not. Buy a good quality mount as mentioned and you should be fine.

    The only downside is that you need to use ARMS rings to go along with the mount. The plus side is that these are easy on-easy off with absolutely no change in zero. The mount does not interfere with the iron sights and I shoot high power matches without removing the mount.

    I have the GOOD Springfield mount on my NM M1A. It mounts like the Sadlak, by replacing the stripper guide, and using two screws.
    Stay away from the ones that use only one screw.
