Is all 17 HMR ammo unsafe??

With Remington's recall of their 597 semi auto 17 HMR and recall of all their 17 HMR ammo...I am confused. Is all Rem 17 HMR ammo unsafe even in a bolt action? How about other brands? And is all 17 HMR ammo unsafe in any version of a semi auto 17 HMR like a Volquartsen or a Ruger too? May be other semi auto 17 HMRs, just not sure who they are.

    Remington is recalling their rifles because the current .17HMR ammo is not safe to use in their semi-auto 597 rifles. No recall on ammo, just on their rifle.

    No...none of it is actually unsafe. That is just Remington throwing a temper tantrum. Since their ONLY rifle chambered for the 17HMR is disfunctional, unsafe, and they are recalling them, Remington sees the need to further take away from investors profits by buying back all of the ammo too. The ammo is the same as Hornady, Federal, and CCI, and as far as I know is still all made by the same manufacturer...CCI.

    What they should do to offset the buy back of the rifles is fire the upper managment who took that rifle to market before it was ready and tested.

    Hi Jon...not quite sure I agree than the ammo is not being recalled...please go the Remington Arms website and look at the 17 HMR recall, they will pay you $10 for each box of ammo returned. They say it is not safe in a semi auto and therefore they are recalling the 597 too...at least that is the way I read it and I think nononsense's post says the same thing.

    I think that tsr1965 put it in words much better then me. They are recalling their rifles and putting a advisory on using their Remington stamped .17 ammo in semi-auto rifles. If your were to use this ammo in a bolt .17hmr you would be fine, but because it is unsafe to use in their rifle they are refunding you the $10/box. That is the way I am reading it.

    Ok. Since the Remington 597 is garbage...and Ruger doesn't make the 10/17 any more...who is left, Volquartsen and $1000 to $2000 for a semi auto rimfire? Are there other good semi auto 17 HMRs that are in the $400 range?

    Looks like Excel quit making them also. I was just on their web site, their still advertising the 22 Mag rifle. But don't say squat about the one chambered in 17 HMR. Looks like the 17 HMR puts out just to much pressure for a semi-auto. Since everybody who was making them, has dropped them like a hot potato except Volquartsen.

    So let me understand this......remington will send you a $200 or $250
    coupon to buy another remington product for your recalled 597 that you paid $285 for... AND they will send you a $10 coupon to buy other remington ammo for the .17 ammo that sells for $12.50 a box. Are the bean counters over at remington the same people that work for the Federal government?????[xx(]

    Yap you got it!!! Another Remington screw the gun buyer twice; first for selling a piece of junk and then by under paying with Remington reimbursement script, so you have to spend it on more Remington junk!!!
