Odd Broomhandle

I recently picked up Mauser Broomhandle. It is a 1930 date commercial 908843 in 9mm. The odd part is that the barrel length is 7 and 1/4 inches. It doesn't appear to be a re-barrel since the serial numbers match inside and out. Can anyone shed any light on this oddity or perhaps not so oddity I have uncovered?

    I've toyed with dozens of Mausers in the past 40 years and you will come across small variations that don't really warrant excitement. Three-quarter inch or so barrel variations fall into that catagory.

    First lets determine that you have a Modell 30 Mauser.

    1. Is the pistol frame handle un-stepped (isn't "fatter" near the stock mounting boss?)
    2. Does the lanyard swivel side-to side?
    3. Does it have a 50-1000m sight without the 900m setting?
    4. Are there an absence of serial numbers when viewed from the rear?

    If all above is correct, you have a Modell 30.

    Now, the problems. Modell 30's were made in .30 Mauser only, and had stepped barrels. If item one through four is correct, you have a Modell 30 non-factory altered to 9mm by boring the barrel to the larger size. Easy to spot. The barrel will look unusually thin when viewed from the muzzle.

    If you don't have items one through four, you have an earlier firearm (Prussian contract red "9") perhaps. And if it also has a stepped barrel, you have a new barrel welded onto the upper framework. (hence the unusual barrel length). Best, Joe

    The Modell 1930 (M-30) Mausers are the only variant that has the complete SerNo on the barrel only. The frame has a partial, incomplete SerNo. What does that mean? Is the upper (barrel) "the" firearm according to ATF? And the frame (which doesn't have a complete SerNo) would not be regarded as "the" firearm, and can be handled/shipped as any other gunpart? Just thought I'd throw an interesting observation out for all to ponder. Joe

    1-4 are correct and when compared with my 30cal, the muzzle looks thin. Rifling also looks like it has never been shot. The re-bored is a helpful 'twist' on things forgive the pun, but I am still curious about the 7 1/4 barrel length as I am used to the 5 5s and shorter.
