What ammo to use?

I recently acquired a Colt (Argentine) 1927 and want to make sure of the correct ammo before shoot. It seems like I was told at one time that the 1911's should only shoot "ball" ammo.....

.45 auto or .45 ACP or ??

Question number two....What is ball ammo? Just FMJ ammo, not defensive?

I am not new to guns, just trying to clarify a couple of things.

    45 auto(matic) is the same thing as 45 A(utomatic) C(olt) P(istol), but is not the same as 45 GAP (Glock Auto Pistol).
    Ball means the "standard" military bullet IOW FMJ vs tracer, AP etc

    While "Ball" or FMJ ammo will feed the most reliably, however most will handle one of the HP (hollow point) types reliably (you may have to try a few to find out which one yours likes best)

    I owned one of those old Argentine Colts and it would NEVER function with hollowpoint ammo--the only ammo that worked was 230 grain FMJ's. You can of course take it to a good 'smith and have them do a polish & throat job on the barrel & ramp and get some Wilson Combat mags-then you might get hollowpoints to feed reliably. You also might just try Corbon Powrball or the new Hornady Critical Defense ammo--those types use FMJ with a polymer tip at the end to feed like a regular FMJ but expand when they hit tissue--thats what I use in my Llama 9mm 1911 that wouldn't feed hollowpoints, but if feeds the Hornady just fine.

    edit-never mind on the Hornady-they don't offer it in .45acp just yet-so you will have to go with Corbon--the Corbon is a +p load so make sure your gun is in good condition.
