shipping guns in Virginia

Can anyone clearify the rules of shipping from an individual to a FFL holder in Virginia? I have not been able to find a shipper that will accept a long gun here in Va. When I can get an answer from them, they all tell me they only do FFL to FFL.

    I shipped a couple of guns from NY to FFL's in VA earlier this year, one in eastern VA, the other south of Roanoke. I'm not a FFL holder. I believe both FFL's in VA were pawn shops. You just have to ask around.

    My problem is finding a shipper that will send a gun originating from Virginia. They don't seem to know anything or they just flat "don't do guns".

    Have you tried the Gunbroker list of FFLs?

    I have always found those on this list to be helpful. I would suggest that you tell any dealer you speak to, "The shipper will include a photocopy of his drivers license with the gun."

    Hello Marlinbird. The problem is that many FFL dealers will nor accept firearms from non dealers BECAUSE they have to have the sellers information to enter into their books that BATFE checks. If you were to go into a ffl dealers store with a firearm then they would want to see a picture ID drivers lic. ETC and you would think nothing about it. So try this. Get in touch by phone to the FFL dealer that you are trying to ship to and see if he will accept your item IF you include a photo copy of your drivers lic. some times this works . I have a C&R lic. and dealers will not ship modern firearms to me but they will accept fire arms from me for the most part. if you are selling make a note in your ad that the buyer has to work out an arrangement on what his dealer will accept from you. and then state what information you are willing to provide.

    Fedex will do it, but it has to be from a real Fedex service counter, not one of those Mail Box, Etc type stores that ship Fedex. Where do you live? If in Northern Virginia, just take it to the main Fedex service counter down by Dulles Airport, off of RT28 in Herndon. I use them all the time, people are real nice.

    Least expensive best way for an individual to ship a longun to a FFL is by insured US priority mail. But first make sure the receiving FFL will accept a firearm from an individual as many will not.

    charles, i live near richmond. i dont have a ffl and have no problem shipping guns all over the country. let the dealer know that you will send them a photo copy of your license and 98% of the time, that will do. i either go to the ups hub to ship and dont have a problem. better than that, the best way i have found is go to a small shipping store, not a ups store! but a place like a book store, or a individually owned shipping store. look around, they are all over the place. they will ship through 3 or 4 different companies and usually ask no questions about what your shipping. just tell them you need to send this package to this place and thats that. and dont worry, you are not braking any laws!

    Redman- agree- except a shipment OTHER than to a licensed person must be declared to the shipper, or you are in fact breaking a law. C&P from Title 18, US Code:

    (e) It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to deliver or cause to be delivered to any common or contract carrier for transportation or shipment in interstate or foreign commerce, to persons other than licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, or licensed collectors, any package or other container in which there is any firearm or ammunition without written notice to the carrier that such firearm or ammunition is being transported or shipped; except that any passenger who owns or legally possesses a firearm or ammunition being transported aboard any common or contract carrier for movement with the passenger in interstate or foreign commerce may deliver said firearm or ammunition into the custody of the pilot, captain, conductor or operator of such common or contract carrier for the duration of the trip without violating any of the provisions of this chapter. No common or contract carrier shall require or cause any label, tag, or other written notice to be placed on the outside of any package, luggage, or other container that such package, luggage, or other container contains a firearm.

    He's actually in the Tidewater, VA Beach area of Virginia....I would suggest finding an FFL from the GB list i8n your area and paying someone to ship it if you don't feel comfortable...just build the expense in your price...


    I'm a non FFL and have sold 5 guns on GB and I always pay an FFL to ship just to CYA..peace of mind is worth it to me
