    Todd,

If it lettered properly, it would be a $9500 rifle. The deeply marred butt stock knocks it down about 10%. It would be interesting to know what the serial number is, and have it rechecked.

Hi Bert.........The seller confirms the rifle is as staed in the Cody letter except for the caliber...s/n is 14868.

Looks like a very nice single shot.... I do have a weakness for those Swiss Butt Plates, even if it's not a repeater[;)]

    Best regards,
    Marty

    Hello Todd & Marty,

I have a copy of the ledger page that this rifle is listed on, and it does not exactly match the rifle "except for the caliber".

    Serial 14868 is listed as follows;

Received in warehouse: November 11th, 1887
    Type: Rifle
Caliber: 32-40 (it actually has a ditto mark, and the preceding serial number rifle is a 32-40)
    Barrel: Octagon 30" #3
    Trigger: Plain
    Stock: CS PG
Remarks: Swiss Butt, no rear seat
    Sights: Grad Peep rear
    Sold: November 12th, 1887
    Order: 587

The tang sight currently on the rifle is not a Graduated Peep... instead, it is a Mid-range vernier tang sight.

So, my take on this is that the barrel and the tang sight have been swapped out. There is no mention in the records of an "R & R". Personally, I would not be willing to pay what the current high bid amount is.

So in other words it would make for a good budgetary shooter or a real nice tomato stake?[}:)][}:)][}:)][:D][:D][:D]

Bert...just otta curiosity, do you know or have an idea what is meant in the record. " Remarks: Swiss Butt, no rear seat". What's the seat?

    Regards,
    Marty

No rear dovetail for a sight. It would mean that the gun probably came with a tang sight.

Now that you point it out it makes perfect sense. I'm just not thinking 'Dovetail' Seat

    Thanks....Marty
