"Pepper Spray"
Not exactly a "gun" question, but I'm betting you folks can help.
My daughter is 23 and living alone in a rural eastern state but working as an EMT in a large metro area.
I want to get her some version of a pepper spray. Won't go into all the reasons that a more lethal option is not being considered at this time.
At any rate I'm sure that when it comes to pepper sprays there are, at least, good, better, best and worthless.
Sure would appreciate any experiences, opinions, info referals, etc. that might help me in deciding on a decent option.

As an LEO we use FOX FIVE point SEVEN....
with pepper spray percentage of OC(Oleoresin Capsicum) is misleading....
Scoville Heating Units is the rating that matters for Pepper Spray... Fox is 5.3 million SHO.....it is horrendous....that is the amount of burning, lung inflammation, snot and mucous....a general not so pleasant feeling....
ALSO....alot of non-flammable Pepper Sprays are actually flammable...Fox is not flammable..its been tested and tested...
I have been exposed to several different brands of OC...Fox is by far the nastiest, most debilitating OC Spray on the market....
It may take a bit of work to find some, but its worth it for your Daughters Safety
I've been shot with a Taser X26 3 times, and I'd rather take another 5 second ride then get sprayed with Fox again...I felt like ass for over an 2 hours0 -
Not sure if Fox is a spray or stream, but I have heard good reports about it.
Another good OC brand is Freeze +P. It is a stream type. Streams are more effective in windy conditions.0 -
Most of the over the counter sprays aren't very effective and some states (you did say an eastern one) restrict the ones that really work to law enforcement. As an EMT I'd bet she could get the real thing through a local law enforcement agency. Please urge her to take pepper spray training though that agency also. Most of the stories you hear about pepper spray not being effective is because the user (even some LEOs) didn't have a clue how to properly use it. 0 -
We use a product called First Defense Stream X2 MK-3 from Defense Technology of Casper Wyoming. This stuff is mean.

The percent (5%,10%,etc) does not matter. The higher the SHU is the more "Burn" it has. Defense tech make good stuff!! 0 -
The only thing I can add here is that training matters.
You have to know not only how to use the stuff, but when its OK to use it (and that includes possible licensing in certain states), what NOT to do, and the exact spraying characteristics of the particular formulation you have.
Just buying a tube (whatever the brand) and throwing it in a purse is really not a good idea.0 -
I just got an article from a person about useing wasp and hornet spray as a defense weapon.
A lady keeps it on her desk in a place that has had problems in the past.
It sprays a stream about 20 feet and blinds an attacker who has to get help at a hospital. I know it works on hornets, I spray a nest at night, kills the bugs and eggs and those hornets that return soon.
If you're threatened at your door by an assailant it may be better than useing a pistol or shotgun. - Won't injure a neighbor like a bullet would.0 -

IMO, this is a REALLY bad idea.
Its one thing if its a pinch, you're life is on the line, and that's all you've got.
But its quite another thing to deliberately carry an insecticide and misuse it as a defense weapon.
First of all, its actually against Federal law to do it, and it says so right on the bottle "It is against Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labelling". Want to gratuitously open yourself up to Federal prosecution?
It may also be against local law to do this.
Next issue (and its a real one) if you deliberately carry an insecticide then poison or permanently blind someone with it, you're opening yourself up to SERIOUS civil liability, and that's EVEN IF its a legitimate self-defense scenario.
The reason is, any third party (prosecutor, plaintiff, or jury) will wonder why the heck you didn't just use ordinary pepper spray, which is designed for the same purpose and (if used properly) causes no permanent damage!
If there is *ANY* legal way to obtain pepper spray in your State, then there is no plausible defense here.0
