S&W Model 14 - *nickel*
Hi,
For my personal collection I recently purchased an old S&W K-38 Model 14 in Nickel (22kxxx). I have never seen a Model 14 in Nickel before except for the S&W Dayton Model 14. I'm pretty sure it's not the Dayton model because its not a heavy barrel, and I don't think I got that lucky. The gun also has a brass plate on the bottom of the grips (grips are S&W target grips). I have never came across this either.
Can somebody provide me with any information on this gun/grips? Is this a normal factory finish that was produced with the model 14, or was this special ordered? Any information would help.

When asking about a modern S&W, it's always helpful to post the (dash) number. That is, on the side of the frame visible only when the cylinder is open, it should say Model 14-(number).
Yes, some M14's came from the factory with nickel finish. They are quite rare &, if documented, will bring a substantial premium. I've never seen one, but would expect it to have an "N" stamped on the frame, the bottom of the barrel & back of the cylinder. If not, well, you can buy a factory letter, but my guess would be that all the special work is aftermarket.

EDIT: Lefty, the Dayton Police special order M14 had the 4" heavy barrel used on some M10's, as opposed to the solid rib barrel found on most M14's.0 -
Brett, Your gun was made in late 1977. You say it does not have a heavy barrel. All model 14's I have seen have heavy barrels. Are you sure your gun has not been re-barreled and re-finished.
I bought this one a few months ago at auction. Its the first I had seen, so I grabbed it. It has the heavy barrel.

Lefty, it's a heavy barrel, just not the heavy barrel they used for the Dayton's. (the gun i have looks identical to yours) Nice find.0 -
