    to qualify as antique status it has to have been made prior to 1899. There are guns that are old and are not antiques but are considered a Curio or Relic.

    Date, not age; under federal law, an "antique firearm" must have been made < 1899.

    Your state/local law may be more restrictive.

    As far as the feds are concerned 1898 or earlier manufactured firearms are antiques. This isn't written in stone as far as some left wing States or Municipalities are concerned though. If you for instance are cought with a revolver able to fire readily available ammo in some place like New York City, you would wind up in jail, antique or not.

    ruger41 has given the government's ATF legal description of an antique firearm. Outside of the government, a lot of us have a more forgiving definition, and it tends to vary from collector to collector. For a lot of us, anything made before WWI is just as interesting a collectible as one made before 1899. For others, an antique has to be strictly from the black powder era, roughly before 1890 or so.
