colt sp-1 question
just had a colt sp-1 traded in and the serial number is sp55402. not sure on the older rifles but this fore-end isnt the triangle shape i normally see on them. am i correct in assuming it is an aftermarket or did they put different stocks on some of them.
also it says in the blue book(i know not a defintive source) that the serial number range ends at sp55301, about one hundred less than this one has, it has a 20 inch barrel so its not the carbine, is the blue book wrong or what?
any help is appreciated?

You are correct, the handguards have been replaced. Your book is wrong, SP1 go up into the 200000 range, for both the carbine and rifle. I would make sure everything else is correct on it before I sold it as a "colt". Check the barrel markings, marking between the FSB, forge markings on the upper right below the site, the markings on the bolt and carrier, note what bolt it has in it. 0 -
Your AR was made in 1976. The SP-1 was made from 1964-1985.
The upper should have a C M in the space bellow the rear sight on the right side, if it is a Colt upper.

Colt sp1, does it have the collapsing stock? The colt sp1 had a 16 barrel and a collapsing stock. It also had the short front hand guard and it was round, not triangular. 0 -

I have #5393X which is very close to yours; triangular handguard and of course no forward assist. If your has the round front it may be a replacement(?) So does your upper have a forward asist? 0 -
Sp1's may or may not have a forward assist. The early ones didn't the newer ones did. The same goes for the handguards. 0 -

SP1 rifles were made in both rifle and carbine configuration. Rifle configurations will have A1 and A2 stocks on it. Carbine configurations will have a 16 inch barrel. This SP1 though, was a rifle, which means it should have the A1 or A2 stock. I forget the year that they switched this. Round Handguards should be on 1979 or 1980 rifles.
This particular rifle should be 1-12 twist, and it will be marked accordingly. The carrier should also be parked with a chrome bolt.0 -

The gentleman clearly has a 1976 produced SP-1 Sporter. The Collapsible Stock model (AR-15 Sporter w/collapsible Stock #6001) was not sold until 1978: ]
From the Standards of Firearms 2008
AR-15 Sporter w/Collapsible Stock (#6001)is the same as the above (AR-15 Sporter #6000) fitted with a 16" barrel and folding stock. Weigh approximately 5.8 lbs. Introduced in 1978 and discontinued in 1985.
Both of these first two SP-1's had no forward assist. So whether they were made that way at one time or not, yours should be triangular and have no forward assist.0
