7.7 Jap relaoding.
I need some advice on reloading for a 7.7 Ariska. I searched the forum for some info and found info from 2001. I would like to hear from anyone with recent experience. I am looking at using some 4895 powder and reformed cases from the auction side. I have also found .311 bullets are available. Has anyone tried pulled bullets from a 7.62x39. Some had .311 bullets. Please offer any advice. Thanks

Any reputable reloading manual shoud give you all the info you need to successfuly load for this Ctg. You probably should slug the bore just to be certain of the correct bullet diameter. 0 -
I just loaded some for this last week. My speer manual showed a start charge of 37 max 44 for a 150 gr bullet and IMR 4895. I personally limit it to 43 given the reformed cases and slight bulge at the base, though the Arisaka action is quite strong with good gas venting. They were showing a max velocity of around 2700 fps.
I've not tried pulled X39 bullets. They would probably be 123-5 gr bullets. With those you could up the charge listed above a bit, but you're unlikely to find data for that bullet weight. You might use .308 data for that weight as a guide but again, you'd be going out on your own there. I have used those bullets in 7.65X53.5 Argentine, a fairly similar cartridge, but never had much luck with them.0 -
I've used 4895 for mine for years and it works well. Data is available from most of the latest reloading manuals. I've had great success with 150 gr. and 174 gr. bullets but those lighter bullets meant for 7.62x39 have been erratic at best, both in my Arisaka and my Enfields. Other than because you've already got it, why would you want to use reformed brass when Graf & Sons has genuine 7.7 mm brass for a very reasonable price? When it's reformed from 30.06 brass it works but the head dimensions are never quite right. Graf's also has Privi FMJBT 150 and 174 available in bulk for very reasonable prices.
Good luck with that Jap rifle. As long as you've got an early or mid-production rifle and not a "last ditch" you'll likely be surprised as how well it shoots.0 -
I've loaded 7.7 Jap 150 grain Speer into new Graf cases. Same bullet, same case with same over all length 3.1520". 45 gr. IMR 4895, 44 gr. IMR 4320, 41 gr. IMR 3031, AND 46 gr. H-380. I finally settled on 44 grains of H-380 for my Rifle. The IMR 4895 does seem best in my 7.5 x 55 Schmidt Rubins and of course the M1, Try a different mix of things and see what she likes. 0 -
