If it were me personally, it would be a 180gr handload with the Sierra bullet and it is a bear load for me in my '06. But I see no reason why a 180 from the factory of any of those companies would not work. I am partial to Federal products alot tho. I see little reason for the 200 grain weights given a well built 180grainer.
There is no law I am aware of saying you couldn't use a good 165 either if your gun refuses to shoot a 180 well.
But I do like the 180's for bigger than deer bullets in the '06.

165-180 would be fine! Back in the 80's the Federal Forest Service did an exhaustive study on "close-range stopping power" for their rangers who worked in Alaska in big bear country. They found that the 30-06 with 220 gr. Silvertips did very well and was very close to a 375 H&H which turned out the best...they wound up providing the 375 H&H with special made 20" barrels (one gun for each crew of four). For CLOSE CHARGING, HUNGRY & CRANKY BEARS!!!

For all-conditions shooting, a Nosler 165-180 Partition would be a good idea. Even at longer range, the Partition will give good expansion with adequate penetration. Any of the premium loads will do the job but some don't give the expansion I would like to see. I used Hornady 180 factory loads on baited bear in Ontario and performance was perfect at close range.

I would consider to be in good company with any of the 165-180 grain factory loads. If you are going to be under 100 yards, then the 180 grain Remington Round nose corelokt is outstanding! For the premium bullet line, I would not be afraid of the 150 weight in the Accubond, or anything that had a Barnes TSX, or Nosler Partition.

I agree with a good 165-180gr. bullet. I used the 165 for blackies when living in Michigan. They did a good job dropping them.
