Hello are you asking about a 455 WEBLEY Cartridge that is used in some 1911 type pistols sent to ENGLAND [?][?] I don't think Colt ever had a cartridge. Named 455 COLT
Edit Thanks Tail Gunner . I learn something every day on these forums . I guess when one has narrow interest "Colt 1911 type pistols" I fall into the TRAP and ASS U ME this man was talking about one of these in 455 webly auto.or 455 webly revolver. [:I]0 -
If you have a Colt handgun marked .455, it's .455 Webley caliber.
Many revolvers chambered for .455 were altered slightly to accept .45 ACP/.45 Auto Rim. Same diameter case*. We're talking revolvers, here, right?
However, you aren't altering a firearm. The nearest shell-casing is the .45Colt. Both .455 Colt Eley (Webley mk1) and .45 Colt have case diameters of .480. *The Eley tapers slightly, and should not be too difficult to establish taper with the correct dies. Now..The .45Colt brass will have to be:
1. Shortened to .455 length. (.886)
2. Re-sized to form the slight taper
3. Case rim (this is the biggest problem) the .45 Colt rim is almost twice as thick as the .455. If there's cylinder binding due to the thickness, I'd abandon the project, and get some (Starline, or Fiocchi, etc) brass in the correct caliber.
Best, Joe

PS There are at least 3 455 cartridges.
Most notably 455 COLT, my sample that is headstamped "Dominion 455 Colt" and has a case length of .860.
Than there is the 455 Webbly Revolver round, mine is headstamped "K42 VIZ" (Kynoch 1942, mark 7 loading) CL of .741
And than there is the 455 Webbly Auto cartridge, which has a CL of .916 (vs the 45ACP with a CL in the .890-,895 range)0
