Some SKS can use detachable magazines? Mine has a fixed. What do I need to buy to be able to chang magazines instead of using stripper clips?

The detachable mags for the standard SKS require nothing other than removing your fixed magazine (AND making sure that the bolt is fully to the rear before removing or inserting). I tried several brands/types a few years ago, and all were nothing but heartache. I was getting FTF's and the mags were a general pain to use. I finally went back to the original (and reliable) 10 round box mag, and use the stripper clips.
Some SKS models from years past would accept AK mags, and I understand that they are reliable. I know the trigger housing is different ( http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=137285400 ), and I am not sure what parts you may need for the front of the mag well to make your SKS work properly with the AK mags.

I think all you'd need to do is buy the detachable magazines and remove your current fixed magazine.
But before you do this, consider several potentially significant disadvantages of detachable SKS magazines.
As mentioned, most of the detachable magazines are unreliable, itself a good enough reason not to bother.
Next, putting them in your gun may not be legal depending on what jurisdiction you are in.
If you want to follow the BATFE rules on foreign made guns (of which your SKS qualifies), the guns need a certain number of American made parts in them before they no longer qualify as imports to install a high cap magazine legally. This area of the law, in particular, is fairly cloudy (on purpose) and is also poorly enforced.
Meanwhile, guns with fixed magazines (even obvious military arms like the SKS) are generally not considered "assault weapons" with low-cap fixed magazines. Stripper clips are legal everywhere that I know of.
With practice, its possible to load an SKS with a stripper clip nearly as fast as changing a detachable mag.
Other than legality virtually everywhere, stripper clips have a few distinct advantages over detachable ones.
First of all, stripper clips are dirt cheap, to the point where they might be considered disposable (though of course you can reuse them virtually indefinitely if you choose to).
Next, they're both lighter and less bulky than magazines in similar capacity.
Lastly, as to those SKS guns that take AK mags, yes, they do exist, but they aren't common, and if you can find one, its liable to cost nearly as much, if not as much as an actual AK rifle.

None of the detachable SKS mags will work reliably stick with the original 10 round mags. The Chinese also made some non detachable 20 round mags that work well. Do yourself a favor and leave yours alone[img][/img]

i tried to put one on my yugo sks and it wouldnt go on there right so i said forget it and went with the stripper clips plus its moe fun to see how quick you can reload using the clips 0 -
I would stay with the ten round fixed. I purchased a twenty round Chinese and put it on a Russian rifle and after cutting up the Russian ten round inner mag to the size of the Chinese, cutting and grinding and smoothing I got a one hundred percent functing mag lots of work. Out of the box the 20 round would not work on the Russian. I also have some of the 30 round detachable mags and I worked on them and worked on them and worked on them and worked them and worked on them, got them working and went back to the fixed.

i have a yugo sks with draganov stock, 4x30 scope, and bipod. i have only found 2 magazines that work rite. i have a 20 round and a 30 round. stay away from the plastice and poly ones they are complete crap. the 2 that i found are steel and they work everytime. 0 -
The 20 round fixed mag in the above photo required a lot of dremel tool work to make it fit.

SKS-D and SKS-M take AK mags from the factory. Anything else is an aftermarket exercise in engineering. Loading from strippers is plenty fast, but as someone said above the Chinese 20 round fixed mag works well too. 0 -

Just leave it with the original 10 round. If you cannot handle your business with 10 rounds then you should move to a better neighborhood. 0
