I bought a Colt New Service at the auction the other day( really legaly stole it)[:D] in 45 long colt,serial number 319xxx, dates it to 1923. My question is that someone shortened the barrel and put a ramp on it and now it looks like a Python on steriods[:0] Was this something that was done a lot back in the 30s,40s,50,???????[}:)][}:)] Any info on this pistol greatly appreciated[^][^][^]

    Welcome to the forums! Now..

    Without knowing the bore condition (frosted/pitted, etc), and if the nickel plating was done at the factory, I'd venture for insurance purposes $750. Written appraisal is usually necessary, and premiums are high.

    Best insurance is a hidden wall-safe, or gunsafe. Prevents firearms from entering the black market, also. Rgds, Joe

    Thank you for your reply. The bore on the gun is clean and does not have any pitting there is one spot on the barrel that has a small pit in the nickel about the size of a pinhead. How could I find out if the plating was done at the factory or not

    I believe that a Colt factory letter would be the only way to tell for certain that the grips and finish were factory original. Unfortunately Colt charges quite a bit for one of these letters.

    If the grip and finish were "factory" though, it would make a quite substantial difference in value. Probably at least 100% over pistol that was nickel plated and had replacement grips fitted after leaving the factory.

    Your little Colt is a Vest Pocket model 1908 or 1908 Hammerless .25auto and was made in 1919. From the pictures I would guess it was factory nickeled. Who knows about the grips.

    Blue Book advises the nickeled 1908 are valued at:

    100% 98% 95% 90% 80% 70% 60%
    $1,150 $950 $800 $600 $500 $400 $325

    Add 50% for factory pearl grips.
    100% values assume NIB condition. Subtract 15% if without cardboard box in 95% or better condition only


    Rufe-snow and the others are right about getting a factory letter from Colt. The money spent could make a tremendous difference in the asking/sale price for the gun.
