Smokeless powder OK?

I recently bought a 10 gauge Winchester Model 1901. Does anybody know which type of shells it takes? I don't know much about old shotguns and, although I want to shoot it, I have a hunch that it doesn't take the 3 1/2" shells commercially available. Thank you. 0 -
Yes, BUT with a very important caveat...
Winchester specifically designed the Model 1901 (actually redesigned the Model 1887) to handle smokeless powder. However, the smokeless powder of those days was low-pressure, and essentially emulated black powder pressures. I strongly recommend not using modern high-pressure shotgun loads in that old design. Keep the pressure below 7.5K psi, and remember, the Model 1901 was designed for a 2-7/8" shell (or shorter)... it will not handle modern 10-gauge shells.0 -
virgil if you cannot figure out how to make the shells yourself there are a few companies that do custom make them 1 being pacific coast cartridge--they do offer the 2 7/8" in a blackpowder load and they may be able to load smokeless if you wanted--you can use a blackpowder load in the gun you just have to make sure to clean it at the end of the days shooting. http://www.pacificcoastcartridge.com/ammo.htm 0 -
