What is the "point"? I need to get a stock for the 1892 (old beta up one preferred) and can't find one. If I obtain the 1894 stock, what may I run into?

  Hello HAIRY,
  
  Every single stock that Winchester made was specifically hand-fitted to the gun it was intended for. When you try swapping them between different (non original) guns, the fit at the upper and lower tangs might be loose, or tight, or too far below, or too far above the intersection between the steel and wood. The same problems can be encounted with the fit to the receiver frame on either the butt stock or the forend stock. The forend stock may not fit up with the nose-cap (on a Rifle), or with the barrel band on a Carbine. Essentially, it is a crap-shoot, and trial & error.
  
  As it applies to the forend stocks, only the Model 1892 38 WCF and 44 WCF will interchange with a Model 1894 forend stock. The magazine tube for the 25-20 W.C.F. and the 32 W.C.F. Model 1892s is much smaller in diameter, and therefore the channel in the forend stock is smaller.
  
  Unless you get lucky, it will not be difficult for an experienced Winchester collector to see that the stocks are not factory original.
