Stock Repair with Brass Pins

Seen many military stocks with a crack repair using brass pins.
Anybody got any info on how this was done? Are the pins just a simple brass rod or what? Any info would be appreciated.

  I've seen brass rod repairs on British rifles that looked like a very course (wood screw style) all-thread. I believe it was done to reinforce weak areas in the stock and for patch work. I assume the repair depot would drill, glue, and insert this "all-thread" into the stock and cut flush/finish. I have a Remington 721 with the same style of brass insert(s) but I believe these are factory.

  Brownells has 2 different size brass pin repair kits with the correct size drill bit.
  Glue crack with acra-glass drill correct size hole, insert pin in electric drill, cover brass pin threads with acra-glass screw in to pre drilled hole. Cut off ends of pin and finish pff with file.. Most of the time it is better to clamp stock near crack.

  I just use brass screws. Make sure they are real brass, not just plated. I clamp the wood after gluing. Then drill a pilot hole. Screw the screw into the wood until the unthreaded shank is just into the hole, and cut the remainder off. If you get the right screws, the shank is a little bigger than the threaded part.
