Scope Adjustments?

I have a question I never thought about until a relative asked. I have always sighted a scope in frist at 25 yards then moved to 100 yd.
The question is , if using a scope with 1/4 minute adjustments how many clicks do you use at 50 yd and at 75 yard to move adjustment 1 minute? I have heard some say 8 others say 12 for the 50 yard adjustment which would mean either 8 or 6 at the 75 yard mark.

    At 25yd you need to move it 4 tims as many clicks as you would at 100, to move the bullet the same distance
    At 50 yd you would need to go twice as many clicks.

    How many clicks that is will depend on how many clicks/inch the scope itself is IE 2 clicks/" (moa), 4 clicks/" (moa), 8 clicks/" (moa)

    IOW 1" at 25yd is 4 moa, 1" at 50yd is 2 moa while 1" at 100yd is 1 moa (and 1" at 200yd is only 1/2 moa)

    Edit, note that I'm using INCHES. If you want to talk MOA ONLY, than it dosn't matter what the range is, 1 MOA is 1 MOA (1/4" @ 25yd, 1/2" @ 50yd, 3/4" @ 75yd, 2" @ 200yd, etc), so to move a 4 click/MOA scope 1 MOA you would move it 4 clicks at any distance

    If the distance is 1/2 then each click is 1/2 of the longer distance. 1/4 min per click 25 yards =16 clicks per inch ,50 yards =8 clicks per inch

    It is my understanding it will be 16 clicks for 25yd, 8 clicks for 50 yd 6 clicks for 75yd and 4 click for 100 yards is this what everyone is saying? If one starts at 100 yards and goes back to 25 yards then it fgures to be 4 clicks 100 yards 8 clicks for 75 yards 12 clicks for 50 yards and 16 clicks for 25 yards? This is figuring 4 clicks for it 25 yards of use? [?][?]

    I know the OP did state 1/4" MOA adjustments this information about the number of clicks is ONLY true for 1/4" MOA click adjustments. 1/4" MOA click is the most common but there are also 1/8", 1/3" and 1/2" that are also semi common.

    Nwcid, You are correct as I have a couple of rifle scopes that use the 1/2 adjustment.

    Ummm, NO
    1/2 the distance (50yd) double the clicks. 1/4 the distance (25yd) 4 times the clicks. Double the distance (200yd) and it only takes 1/2 the number of clicks to move the same distance.

    It sounds like you are getting inchs and angle confused. The angular change/click stays constant, regardless of distance. The "measured" movement/click changes with distance.
    Draw 2 lines that are at an angle to each other, the further you get away from the intersection point, the further apart the lines are physicly, BUT the angle between them is still the same. Kapesh?

    I just did the math and I get 1.0472" for a minute of angle at 100 yds. Sound about right? We think of it as an inch and, no doubt, that's close enough. A couple of weeks ago I won a bet with a friend when I said he couldn't shoot a 5-shot group of an inch or less from the bench with his .30/06. He shot 1.02. If I'd said "A MOA or less", I'd be out 5 bucks!

    It has been alluded to, but if your scope has 1/4 minute adjustments, it will take 4 clicks to move 1 minute at any distance. The difference is in the distance an minute of angle represents at different ranges.

    For the purposes of simplicity, 1 MOA is approximately 1" at 100 yards. As tangent of an angle is basically linear between 0 and 5 degrees, the distance a minute of angle represents varies in direct proportion.

    Therefore:

    At 100 yards, 4 clicks = 1 MOA = 1"
    At 75 yards, 4 clicks = 1 MOA = 3/4"
    At 50 yards, 4 clicks = 1 MOA = 1/2"
    At 25 yards, 4 clicks = 1 MOA = 1/4"
