.38 special & .38 auto

Quick question- can .38 auto shells be fired safely in a .38 special or a .357 magnum?

  No sir. The 38 Auto has an identical case to the 38 Super which will
  not go in the 38 Special either.
  
  You can put 38 Short and Long Colt in a 38 Special, but nothing else.

  The .38 Auto and .38 Super rounds will probably "go in" most .38 Special or .357s and fire, as the Auto rounds are only .003 larger case diameter and have a semi-rimmed case. Whether it is safe to do so is another question.

  The last time the subject came up on another board, I checked it out.
  A factory .38 Super would chamber with firm thumb pressure in a S&W M19 but not at all in a M28 or Python. I did not fire the shot from the M19 because I did not want a case stuck in the chamber.

  The Super will chamber in most .38/.357 guns.
  DO NOT SHOOT IT IN THEM!
  The Super's pressure is higher than the .357.

  I see similar questions so often, I curious why you would want to? Do you think maybe the gun maker doesn't know what kind of ammo should be used? Or they stamped your gun with the wrong caliber?
