    birtman,

Your gun is a "Model 1, 3rd Issue" & from the ser#, was manuf. c-1868-1869

There was a total of 131,163 made from 1868 to 1881. The bird's head butt & round ribbed barrel distinguish the 3rd Issue gun.

Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson lists:

    Exc+ $1500
    Exc $600
    Fine $350
    VG $285
    Good $225

NOTE! This gun was made to shoot BLACK POWDER ONLY!
It is UNSAFE to use with any modern ammo!

It's a 1st model, 3rd issue all right. Just a glance at the rounded, bird's head grip proves that. These early S&W tipups are becoming rather collectible, or at least they were before the recession pushed everything into a tizzy. Of the model 1s, the biggest prices go for the first issues.
