  My personal opinion is that for a newly manufactured gun there is no reason to get a letter unless a person wanted documentation on its original configuration and when and where the gun originally shipped. This information might be relevant if someone was trying to verify provenance of a gun that was purported to have been sold to someone important and where it was shipped might provide part of the proof; or if the gun was a rare configuration or very limited production. Sometimes letters will have "sold to" information in addition to "ship to" information if it was a special order.
